Intel wants to challenge Nvidia GeForce and AMD Radeon with new Xe discrete GPU product line

Intel is planning to enter the GPU market with it's planned Intel Xe product line in 2020. While it seems like they're laser focused on datacenter graphics, they do mention an enthusiast tier likely meaning they're working on gaming GPUs as well. 

 

This could mean the start of some healthy competition between three graphics card makers and end up ultimately driving down costs for everyone. 

 

I hope they use freesync though, Nvidia needs to be knocked off it's proprietary high horse..

Why would Intel develop a GPU series just to use AMD Freesync, that would seem counter-productive.

Why use in house proprietary when yo can outsource for free?

Intel's iGPUs already support VESA adaptive sync, which is basically non-branded freesync. It's the same for almost all purposes and cross support is almost universal.

 

Either way, it's way too early to care. We'll see in a year.

Just a list of my personal scores for some products, in no particular order, with brief comments. I just got the idea to do them so they aren't many for now :)

Don't take these as complete reviews or final truths - they are just my personal impressions on products I may or may not have used, summed up in a couple of sentences and a rough score. All scores take into account the unit's price and time of release, heavily so, therefore don't expect absolute performance to be reflected here.

 

-Lenovo Thinkpad X220 - [8/10]

Spoiler

A durable and reliable machine that is relatively lightweight, has all the hardware it needs to never feel sluggish and has a great IPS matte screen. Downsides are mostly due to its age, most notably the screen resolution of 1366x768 and usb 2.0 ports.

 

-Apple Macbook (2015) - [Garbage -/10]

From my perspective, this product has no redeeming factors given its price and the competition. It is underpowered, overpriced, impractical due to its single port and is made redundant even by Apple's own iPad pro line.

 

-OnePlus X - [7/10]

Spoiler

A good phone for the price. It does everything I (and most people) need without being sluggish and has no particularly bad flaws. The lack of recent software updates and relatively barebones feature kit (most notably the lack of 5GHz wifi, biometric sensors and backlight for the capacitive buttons) prevent it from being exceptional.

 

-Microsoft Surface Book 2 - [Garbage - -/10]

Spoiler

Overpriced and rushed, offers nothing notable compared to the competition, doesn't come with an adequate charger despite the premium price. Worse than the Macbook for not even offering the small plus sides of having macOS. Buy a Razer Blade if you want high performance in a (relatively) light package.

 

-Intel Core i7 2600/k - [9/10]

Spoiler

Quite possibly Intel's best product launch ever. It had all the bleeding edge features of the time, it came with a very significant performance improvement over its predecessor and it had a soldered heatspreader, allowing for efficient cooling and great overclocking. Even the "locked" version could be overclocked through the multiplier within (quite reasonable) limits.

 

-Apple iPad Pro - [5/10]

Spoiler

A pretty good product, sunk by its price (plus the extra cost of the physical keyboard and the pencil). Buy it if you don't mind the Apple tax and are looking for a very light office machine with an excellent digitizer. Particularly good for rich students. Bad for cheap tinkerers like myself.

Because Freesync is free, open source and easy to implement. There's no good reason not to. Nvidia is just milking people for money. 

 

Hopefully Intel brings some much-needed competition to the GPU space, while not impacting Radeon too much.

Why not? Its open source software thats widely used and would allow more persons or entities to easily transfer over to intels offerings. It makes sense

As long as its not like its previous GPU release, things could get interesting.  But past practices typically dictates future results so Im not holding my breathe.

 

And for those willing to take the plunge come release date, bravo for you.  I wont be one of those however.

Please Intel do it properly... Like going full out on GPU's is nice, but AMD and Nvidia have YEARS of experience in creating proper drivers for it and as history teaches us, if the drivers are crap it doesn't matter how good the GPU is.

I mean sure, they could do that.. but Intel is known to having tons of Intel exclusive software for managing hardware. I just don't see them actively doing this.

This is rather old news I feel. Intel has been saying they planned to bring out Discrete graphics for probably 6+ months now.

 

I mean I feel this is a good move for Intel and also beneficial for us consumers, but I am worried that the pricing war we would love won't happen. Intel likes to sell high prices items and so does Nvidia. Some of this is because AMD just isn't competitive with Nvidia atm, so hopefully Intel being close would bring prices more in check on both sides.

this is old news even though the article is new and more details but there were many reports of intel using adaptive sync for long ass time

I'll be interested to see what Intel has to bring to the table. Might make AMD put their GPUs into high gear and perhaps make Nvidia reprice their GPUs to something more competitive.

Pedantic me: Did anywhere in Intel's presentation say it was using FreeSync? Because I'm pretty sure they said they were supporting VESA adaptive sync.

What, because it doesn't run games or use the same API?

 

They could "easily" (oversimplifying it) take a Xeon Phi and have it do graphics (which technically its prototype Larabee did do). The thing is a high performance SIMD compute system. That's all you really need to make a modern GPU.
