Guidance for Installing AMD Wraith Prism

I am sorry, but you are wrong. The cooler is in the unlocked position. The lever needs to be moved to the right.
With the leaver in this position you should be able to wiggle the cooler around if you grab it by the black shroud.

Personally I am a big fan of this mounting system. It is way easier than for example installing a Wraith Stealth.

Please push the two metal retention brackets in, towards the cooler to make sure they fall over the little hooks on the plastic brackets on the motherboard.
Then try to move the lever over to the right, so it will end up in this position:

i really dislike these clip type coolers, really frustrating to work with for me - currently trying to install it on the b450 tomahawk mobo, my question is this - now that I've got the "hooks" on the clip fixed around the holders on the board, do i press lever on the one hook? this lever gets really rigid as I move it backward and I'm worried I'm going to break something.

One side has the black locking lever...make sure the lever is in the 'Unlock' position, or you won't be able to get it through.

Yes, you will need to apply a bit of pressure/force before you are able to swing the lever to the other side, into the 'Lock' position.

Correct, you press the lever on the one hook.

I wasn't paying attention to how i was fiddling wit the lever as I was trying to get the cooler hooked onto the holders, would you be able to tell me whether or not the lever is in the lock or unlocked position in the image below?

I unclipped the retention bracket on lever side and back on to the hook, but when I try to move the lever from left side to right side, it feels like its going to snap or something when it reaches the middle/is in upright position as there is a lot of tension when trying to push it any further right. Also, are you certain this is the correct side as the retention bracket only drops low enough to match the hook when the lever is on the left side.

 

Also the cooler is difficult to wiggle around as it is with the lever on the left

It will be tight, the connection between the IHS and Copper Heat Sink must be complete - and the Thermal Paste allows any tiny miniscule "the eyes cant see" kind of crevice to be filled so that the connection is as complete as possible.  If you are getting it to its apex (upright, super tight) that's the tightest its going to be, follow through with the finish and it will be locked into position.

 

No one wants you to snap your retention bracket.  But its only two clips and only so many ways you can mess this up ;) I remember my first PC build...thought the parts were made of glass.  Now when I mess with PC's I tell the owners to go away, because they stress on how you handle stuff (not throwing it around, but its not FRAGILE either)

finally did it, i think i felt some static when touching the heatsink though...should i be worried and is there anyway to remedy it?

You should technically always be anti-static everything when building a PC....but in my personal experience I build PCs on carpets, in socks, and no anti-static wrist band.  I just ground myself to the case before each touch to a PCB.  If you didnt SHOCK anything, than I wouldn't worry about anything.  And if I DID shock something, I would just boot it up and see if it DID anything :)

hopefully im mistaken - did not see spark or hear sound, and "shock" could be from getting poked on the thumb by part of the copper piping, i was wearing diff clothes to prevent static, built it on table top with anti static package underneath, but its as you said i will find out when i boot....

You should be good - I literally do not do anything anti-static...ever...and have never had a problem (just my testimony on it, not saying it CANT cause issues)

definitely felt static now touching the psu near its fan as i was about to reconnect the 24 pin connector. It could be because im a hairy fella. update - managed to boot.

Always touch the metal case before touching the PCB to take away any shock that may build up

Personally I am a big fan of this mounting system. It is way easier than for example installing a Wraith Stealth.

Please push the two metal retention brackets in, towards the cooler to make sure they fall over the little hooks on the plastic brackets on the motherboard.

Oh you are correct.

They changed the direction of the locking lever with socket AM4.

It was the other side for the AM2 / AM3 / AM3+ cooler.
