17in, 3lb, 19hr Laptop LG Gram

https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/lg-gram-17-gram-2-in-1

I want this thing so much, I love watching movies on my laptop and a bigger screen would be welcome!

Quote

LG has unveiled two new laptops in its Gram lineup in advance of CES in Las Vegas next month, and the Gram 17 looks like a stunner. It weighs just 3 pounds, which is crazy light for a notebook with a 17-inch display.

Quote

LG says the 15 x 10.5 x 0.7-inch Gram 17 packs a 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8565U, up to 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. (There's also a slot for an additional SSD).

Also notable is the 2560x1600 display, 72wh battery, and Thunderbolt 31111752422_aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sYXB0b3BtYWcuY29tL2ltYWdlcy93cC9wdXJjaC1hcGkvaW5jb250ZW50LzIwMTgvMTIvbGctZ3JhbS0xN18zMzc3NDIxNTQ0NTcxOTU2LmpwZw.jpg.a4813ff363b1e5197a50ac2bd87597ac.jpg

Impressive weight, but at the same time, a 17 inch laptop is still not very good on the go due to the size. A laptop that size is just a little unwieldy, hard to use on a plane for instance.

For me 15 inch laptops strike a good balance between productivity and portability.

I want to say "I never thought I'd see a Windows OEM return to 8:5" but Samsung did the same thing a few years ago, with the Ativ Book 9. Still, nice to see another Windows laptop ditch 16:9.

no dGPU? really?

Its main focus is on battery. The gram will never get a dGPU

I think it is great, personally. Macbook Pro's have 16:10 screens. It is great for webbrowsing and productivity, since most websites, text documents, etc are oriented vertically.

The only thing for which 16:9 screens are better is video. But even then, having those black bars top and bottom is hardly noticeable if the bezels are black too.

Eh, really depends on what you're doing. Both are better than 16:9.

To give credit it does have Intel UHD Graphics 620 Integrated Graphics, not great, but certainly feasible to tournament games if you want to.

that isn't fast enough to play Overwatch at playable frame rates, therefore it is very bad.

I am pretty much in the boat of 3:2 for laptops and 21:9 for monitors. 3:2 on laptops just make more sense than anything other than watching movies.

-wasted space where you could throw in more battery (again its main objective)

-optimus does not always keep the GPU fully idle and it does kick up a lot.

On my Matebook X Pro others and I typically get 7 hours and when GPU is disable it bumps it to 10 hours. This goes for the Dell 9650 also of people reporting 3-4 hours with GPU and 6 hours without it.

Its why gaming laptops still suck ass with battery life even though optimus is on. The GPU is still consuming power.

Because gaming is low on the priority list for whom this laptop is meant to cater to. Intel's graphics are fine for doing most things consumers will do not gaming related.

Besides, if it's not automagic, then don't bother.

If you call it 8:5 you will confuse people. 16:10 is the standard name for it.

More likely to reduce size and weight. A dedicated gpu takes up a significant amount of weight and space when you factor in the required cooling.

8:5 is the official term. 16:10 is the marketing term to place it on the same level as 16:9, a la how 2:1 is marketed as 18:9 now.
