Capcom is adding in game advertising into Street Fighter 5

Just when you think they can't sink any lower the games industry finds a way to blow everyone's expectations clean out of the water.

 

In the patch notes for the latest SFV update Capcom have noted a new advertisement system where players can view adverts during various points in the game (in stages & on loading screens) as well as enable ad costumes where the characters have ads directly on them during gameplay.

Capcom is set to launch in-game advertisements in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition on December 11, and players who choose to keep them activated will get to enjoy some bonuses and content.

 

Capcom called the in-game ads Sponsored Content, and they will show costumes and bundles that players may purchase for Street Fighter V, as well as the Capcom Pro Tour. The feature was revealed alongside the announcement that there will be a free trial of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition on the PlayStation 4 and PC from December 11 to December 19.

 

The ads will be seen on Street Fighter V characters through Ad Style costumes, on loading screens before a match, and on certain elements of some tournament stages.

Players will have a choice to disable them however they will be sacrificing in game currency by doing so, it's not clear if players will earn more than current for viewing or less than current for not.

For players who would rather not see the ads, there will be an option to turn them off through the Battle Settings. Unfortunately, there is a catch when deactivating Street Fighter V in-game ads.

 

Street Fighter V players who keep Sponsored Content turned on will be able to receive bonus Fight Money in Ranked and Casual matches. The Sponsor Display option is also the only way to access Ad Style costumes.

This is a full priced AAA game, you've already paid them $60 plus however much more for DLC. Some players are pointing out the obvious, right now it's only ads for Capcom stuff but how long until Ryu is wearing Nikes or Zangief is telling you to go buy a Corsair Keyboard?

Jim Sterling is right (I mean he's always right), the games industry will never be satisfied with what they have. $60 plus DLC and microtransactions and lootboxes and deluxe editions and figurines and now fucking adverts as well.

I remember when Ultima Online came out and the thought of paying a monthly fee for gaming was strange, but then Everquest happened and it became acceptable. Then WoW happened and it really clicked that "well, it's cheaper than 1 movie a month" for how much on-going entertainment you could get.

 

The fact they now want to nickel & dime everyone that's ever bought their game is getting a bit much. Not that product placement in games, for paid reasons, is new. (EA was doing it back in the 1990s.) But this is getting a bit much.

Star Citizen was entirely funded via Kickstarter money.

 

And before anyone calls it a scam, EA makes billions off of the FIFA franchise from loot boxes.

 

When Visceral was working on that solo Star Wars story driven game, the person in charge was showing it to the board of directors, their response was "where is your version of FIFA" essentially.

 

These companies will never be satisfied despite making more money at less cost than any time in history. People need to stop pretending that it isn't devaluing games as a whole, just because they can't possibly admit to themselves they made a bad purchase in buying their favorite franchise.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Which is why I've already made the decision that if the gaming does these 3 things:

 

1) Turn into a subscription based pay to play the game service (think about paying $50 a month just to play a game or set of games you don't ever own not counting DLC etc)

2) Go all digital

3) Game streaming exclusively

 

I will not buy any new games.

Yeah.

 

I mean that has always admittedly seemed stupid to me even the bundles Nintendo do are guilty of this they sell a special edition switch with a game and give a download code on a piece of paper or worse what you just said lol.  I mean I don't like the thought of all digital releases for a multitude of reasons (even if I understand the economic incentive behind it) but if you go digital might as well go all the way.

Swat 4 had in-game ads, its an old thing.

Games where you would expect to see billboards anyway, like racing games, I don't mind as they aren't shoved in your face and it can add to the immersion. And most racing games are advertising cars already...  

 

Though maybe this comes around to my super unpopular opinion, it's time AAA games increased in price. AAA games have been around 60USD (depending on local currency) for a very long time, if we want a better experience maybe we should be willing to pay for it upfront? $80, maybe even $100 for something vast like GTA5. No more nickel and diming nonsense with micro transaction and loot boxes in paid for games. I'm not adverse for paying extra for a good expansion though, but season passes can fuck off.

 

I accept online games present an on going cost for as long as the server is switched on, which needs to be covered. But on the console side is that not covered by by the Xbox Live/PSplus? I genuinely don't know if MS and Sony take the cost of running the servers and all the sub revenue, or costs and revenue is shared with publishers? Or if the publishers take a lot of the cost, but MS & Sony take all the revenue, in which case their behaviour is a little more understandable. On the PC side I guess we'd have lots of subscriptions to manage...

I wouldn't mind it if it was properly integrated into games to look like they are actually part of the game. In NFS it looked like someone shoved them in there on purpose.

Capcom really do not care about their consumers. I saw a video where it was mentioned that they are putting micro transaction into their Resident Evil 1 (1996) remaster. Konami is very similar.

This isn't new at all. Need For Speed had Progressive and real companies plastered all over it's in game billboards.

Just before anyone starts bitching about this for the wrong reasons, people do not realize than they've been putting them in games for 10 years, or at least afaik, since Devil May Cry 4. I played the game and haven't even realized that until 2 months ago. It's that much how it impacted the game. Now, just to be clear, I'd rather not have any mtx, but even if they added them, as long as they don't impact the game, all of us can survive, and the game can be good either way. It does not impact the quality of the game.

Now, not to defend Capcom because there is no reason to, I am giving them a chance to show what they're up to with DMC5, the game which will have mtx but for which they actually listened to the fans quite a bit. Or at least Itsuno did, the DMC director. 

Mtx do bring a lot of bad attention to the game, but they are not the end of the world. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

I don't actually have an issue with this. If it's billboards in the background of stages or the loading screen, loading screens will be there anyway, and the billboards if done right could look pretty cool. 

 

Now if it's unskippable adds after or even before the loading screen, then yes, fuck that. 

 

Hell there was a racing/driving game years ago that had billboards that had rotating real world ads and people thought it was amazing

I also don't really care for advertising in games as long as they are suitable for the game and aren't distracting or on your face. Just to mention few very good examples: Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Gran Turismo, Forza and quite the most of sport games. I really wouldn't mind if Rockstar was to sell advertisment space for GTA VI, actually I would find it very good to have real world companies advertising on the billboards of games with advertisments suiting that game, of course there would be controversies but companies would very well know what they are paying for. There's so much chances to advertise within games without it actually mattering, like who would care if the protagonist was to wear Adidas shoes and there would be Adidas advertises across the game world in billboards, TVs and other non essential stuff where there's advertises in the real world?

 

Different story is that if there would be video advertises in loading screens and stuff that really jumps to your face or mechanics like in mobile games that are pure cancer for the gaming world. And here we as a gamers need to be active, if game companies were to go to the cancerous way like mobile games have gone, we need to be vocal and vote with our wallets, but at the same time we must encourage developers who try to find the good ways to generate more profit (like product placement and other good kind of advertising) even if we really couldn't care less and if we would think that they would go over their heads and jump into the cancertrain.

 

And for real. We all probably know that microtransactions and lootboxes are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to make more profit and more intrusive and unfair ways are incoming if the developers and especially publishers aren't given something else to make more profit. If we bitch about everything with what developers/publishers try to make more profit they are just going to go as they want to go and not listen at all, we have to give them some space to move and for that good developers will give us a voice in their decisions and leave something worser off because they can still go to somewhere else that we also agree.
