How hard is programming as a career?

As a teenager who's looking for a job that is future proof I've been learning fundamentals of programming as a skill to make a career out of it. I just wanted to know how hard is it to be a programmer?!

It might sound a little cliche but as long as you like what you do, you don't find it hard. Now programming can be as "hard" as you want it to be: it's a very broad subject with many technologies, specialties, usages. All in all, it's hard to tell if it's harder or easier than any other profession

This is a really vague thing to answer, because there are all kinds of programmers in different fields/languages/specializations/etc.

 

Doing something like web development is actually pretty easy as long as you understand databases.

 

Doing something like AI and machine learning development is fairly easy if you're just using a generic framework that exists and understand big data, but is super super challenging if you're developing those frameworks.

 

Doing something like speech recognition and synthesis is quite challenging if you're on the development side of it (say you're working on siri or alexa), but fairly easy if you're just using the frameworks of it (say, to add alexa or siri support to your application).

 

Generic coding of most things isn't bad as long as you have sound logic and a highly creative problem solving skill set, but would suck if you didn't.

It's a highly competitive field, so at the very minimum if you want a decent chance at even getting to a job interview, you need college education. While you can skirt by without it, you need to have decent projects under your belt and likely know someone in the industry who can get a foot in the door for you.

 

Another aspect that I don't see get mentioned a lot is you will be working with others. And it may not just be other software developers, but testers and electrical engineers. Heck, I went to a mechanical engineer for one of my last projects to make sure I was doing something correctly. While you might be able to get away with not being much of a team player, communication is critical for this kind of work (though I'd argue it's critical for any type of work).

 

Otherwise, as long as you can do the job it's not really that hard. But it can be challenging.

I was a programmer. Granted, it was some time ago, but it was more tedious than difficult. It was like reading someone else's handwriting 8 hours a day. Also, programming can be a quick path to burnout as a lot of dev houses chew up programmers at a very early age. Speaking from experience here.

 

Might I suggest programming as a hobby, and doing something IT-related as a career? Something like a Database-admin, or server admin, or network admin. Enough variety to keep you from being burned out. Little to no "crunch time" and lots of good careers out there in that.

 

Then use programming as a hobby, that will keep it fun (if you like it that is) making a game, or a mod, or something.

Its only hard if you do not have the talent or desire to program. There is however another side to the story of a career in any field and that is will you or can you get a job because some people are just not "socially acceptable" or get along with their co workers so they obviously do not last long at any company. Also one has to look at how diluted the market is for such employees. If there are 100K graduated students looking for a job in a market of only 50k jobs in that field then there is little hope for unskilled, untrained new graduates to even get hired. That side of it all is just a research job. If you post a lot on your social media web pages, employers look at that too. You could be Albert Einstein of the programming arena, but that one word in that one post 25 years ago on Faceplant and good luck, thats if you catch my drift. That is why I do not even log into my Faceplant account, maybe 4 times a year if I am lucky.

 

Perhaps there is a place in those venture tanks that hire young people, or you can do an internship to gain experience. The idea of working for free, is not a good idea, not at all. But what can a graduate really do with a saturated marketplace.

 

There are opportunities for people to earn $100K+ in US or Canada, but no one wants to work 12 hour shifts, outside, in the deep freeze or the sweltering heat and have to break a sweat and keep up the good work ethic. That is why we go through countless Green Horns.

look at which program / games that are not cracked yet

everything is on the internet & there is nothing to protect your patent

China does not observe any laws!

You're great idea will be knocked off within hours of being placed on a store shelf, if not well before because they hacked you're pc.

I have been in the industry 8 going on 9 years now. I am primarily a .NET developer building business applications in the health sector. The technology and development methodologies are forever changing. The job can be challenging when there is a major paradigm shift, in saying that, I enjoy learning, and I enjoy making peoples lives easier through innovation and problem solving. It can be a satisfying career if you want it to be.

I just want to learn programming to work as a freelancer currently I'm doing CAD design but I personally don't see a future for it because developers are making it very easy that even kids now can do CAD and do 3D printing. The language that I'm interested in is Python and based on the research I've done I see a better future!

I'm a freelance programmer and  there's no need to focus on a language. You can learn Python in a day and it's the same for all languages. You might miss some subtleties but you'll get that along the way and you'd still be able to while solid/complex programs regardless of the language. Especially as a freelancer, you'd be working for different clients that are all using different languages and technologies. All in all, it's not about language but programming skills and experience.

Don't categorize jobs by its difficulty. Look at a job which you would like/love to do for a living. If you don't enjoy programming, you won't be a good programmer and will not make a good career of it.

If you don't like math and/or logic (think Spock from star trek) don't make programming a career. I thought I wanted to be programmer, and an IT major, and while I enjoy learning about it, and the technology feild, I've realized I like business and management more. But i've got a lot of tech classes and work in the IT field now. But I also have years of work in retail/management. So i'm going back to school and getting a degree in business I.T. Management. but if you want something really future proof (and technology collapse proof) learn a skilled trade as a back up. carpentry or somthing can be fun and rewarding as well. (my grandfather, father, and uncle where all carpenters/home builders, and welders. They never complained about their work.)

Hi

I stared out as a programer. Didn't have much choice since there was not much else to do with computers in the early 80s.

 

First you can only be as good as your understanding of math. I was not good at math so I was doomed.

 

You can't be the type of person that make simple mistakes. I was Mr syntax error.

 

Learning how to program can help you in any tec career because you learn what things are and not what things appear to be. I don't regret the time or the expense.

 

The biggest downside to programing is you will learn exactly how stupid you really are. I did anyway.

 

I ended up a 3D graphic artist. Like DavidKalinowski I know how things are built whether its carpentry, machining or welding. Building objects in 3D is just an extension of those skills. 3D is also lots of fun. It is like playing with Lego for a living.

 

Like programing it is also a great freelance job since there are lots of small companies that can't afford a full time artist and your gaming rig is all the hardware you need. In the last 30 years I have only been an employee of a company for one of them.

I think you are asking on the wrong forum. 

My guess is that about 1/100 people on this forum knows programming, probably even less. Out of those 100 people my guess is that 30 of them assumes they know what it's like, and will give you horrible advice.

A large part of being (a good) programmer is mastering the domain specific knowledge.

If you need to write a auto-pilot for a airbus it's more about understanding how airplanes work then about the actual programming...

If you want to be the next John Carmack it's more about understanding all the math that goes into rendering a 3D image then about the actual programming...

 

The actual programming knowledge is important as well, off course, but at least as much focus should be put at choosing and mastering a domain you like and are passionate about. Without passion for the domain you won't survive for long as it takes constant effort to keep yourself up to date.

Depends on how hard programming is to you. How good are you at programming? Can you code big physics equations? Can you code complex and spaghetti like logic? Can you read others code and figure out what they do? Code literacy is a must.

Another aspect that I don't see get mentioned a lot is you will be working with others. And it may not just be other software developers, but testers and electrical engineers. Heck, I went to a mechanical engineer for one of my last projects to make sure I was doing something correctly. While you might be able to get away with not being much of a team player, communication is critical for this kind of work (though I'd argue it's critical for any type of work).

 

Otherwise, as long as you can do the job it's not really that hard. But it can be challenging.

I would hire a kid who knows how to set up a lane party as my IT guy XD
