Ontario LTX 2019 Carpool ??

Chronified

EDIT: I didn't think I'd need to specify this, but this isn't a "you should fly / hitchhike / train / greyhound there" thread.

I've thought of that. They're all expensive and/or dangerous. Nope.

Anyone planning on driving to 2019 LTX from somewhere in Ontario?

Plane tickets are hella expensive and with the announcement of an OVERNIGHT DREAM HACK LAN PARTY I'm sure it'll make it much more tempting to drive over.

I'm located in Sudbury, willing to pitch gas and munchies. I drive but don't have my own car, so hopefully looking for someone driving there already :)

Edit: I have a 1+ in town, we're willing to pitch 400 each. If you scroll into the post you'll see that it should more than cover gas given you have a decent car :)

you can fly flair or swoop out of Toronto or Hamilton they will be much cheaper than fuel, although Sudbury to Toronto is quite far to travel to start with

Cheapest round trip at the furthest date I can find is $430 +tax and luggage still and I'd like to bring my gaming PC, luggage isn't going to be cheap.

Then it'd be $80 down and $90 up to get from Sudbury to/from Toronto via Greyhound/Ontario Northland +20 each way for the extra luggage, plus transportation in Vancouver. Plus I haven't flown since I was 8 and I'd REALLY prefer not to try to cross the country alone. Again, I'm 22. I work at McDonalds, have no Credit Cards and no large savings. I could EASILY trap myself in Vancouver/Toronto if anything goes wrong.

Total cost for going alone would be at LEAST $700+food

Total gas required for the round trip would be $300-$375 depending on fuel efficiency and routes taken (I used a 2016 Mazda 3 in the fuel calculator as a common car). I still think taking turns driving out there would be a far better option than flying, especially with 2-4 people in the car.

If you plan ahead, air fare is cheap!

Greyhound would go to eastern border at Manitoba, then you can hitch hike.

You could take Via Rail, its for tourists though so probably expensive unless sleeping in the seat is cheap, who knows.

Flop down to the USA and take the Greyhound!

Sault Ste. Marie Michigan to Seattle is $127 one way!

61 hours! I'd need a few gallons of Vodka and lots of otc sleepers for that trip!

I tried booking as far ahead as the sites would allow me (April) and the prices above are what I got.

22 mildly attractive male hitch hiking in Manitoba? How to get picked up by hicks and forced into slavery 101

Via rail is painfully slow and has no cell reception 3/4 of the time since they drift away from highways into areas that don't need a signal (I've taken it within Ontario), it's a 5 day trip and costs $443+tax+food each way if I book now.

No passport anymore since I'm a registered medical cannabis user, I'm banned from entering the USA due to Trumps dumb laws.

Hence the want to carpool, even if it's 2 people going and they eat at fancy takeout places it'll still cost less than 1/4 than it would to travel with other methods listed (other than going down via the US, that'd only cost 2x the shared method)

I am sure lots will want a hitch hiker in their car, splits the cost on gas.

Passports are good to have, you can get a 10 year passport and go anywhere else but USA. Plus its a backup piece of ID in case you lose your license. Had to use mine once because I lost my wallet.

I've known a few people who can't cross, and they dont give a fuck, they just go to Mexico now instead.

Amazing people can't live without their little device. Just looked at the prices $430 one way and 4 days OuChIe!

I see $335 on Westjet for July 27. Lowest is $220 in April.

You seriously have to think what the gas will cost, because days and days on the road plus food, splitting gas, hotels.

Even a good fuel mileage Hyundai Elantra would get 10km/L. That is 4600km one way, and 48 hours of straight driving. Fuel alone is $1.25/L so $575 in fuel one way, split in two is $300 one way, return is another $300, so now you are at $600, plus food so $100 in food (both ways) and a hotel $50 if you're lucky in some small town, so $100 if not $150. So $800 each for the round trip.

If not $900 return, probably 3 days with a stranger.

$650 return and 10 hours of your time on a seat

Westjet is 5 hrs from TO to Van!

I know what I'd pick, but its not worth it just to go to LTX and its best to slam LTX in with a larger trip, mountain biking down Whistler/Blackcomb, Hiking, Whale Watching, Sailing and whatever else reasons people go to Vancouver for, I hate Vancouver, the island is much better.

Like I already said, I have an expired one that I can get renewed at any time. But it's pointless. Last time I attempted to go to the US to do some shopping in Niagra I was notified that I was barred from entering. I'm on the national medical cannabis users registry, which is on the ban list at all Canada/US boarders.

LTX isn't in Mexico and flying TO>Mexico>Vancouver 1000% isn't going to be cheaper than TO>Vancouver. No help there son.

I don't think you notice that I'd literally need to hitch hike across half of Canada. The greyhound only goes to Manitoba. I'd be stuck going across Sask, Alberta and all of BC. Keep in mind I do work a full time job, this amount of hitchhiking would likely require me to book 2-3 weeks off of work.

Unless I found a trucker doing a coast-to-coast, I could easily be stuck sleeping literally on the side of the road many nights and it would be next to impossible for me to schedule the trip to get there just before LTX.

Not sure where you're pulling this number from, quick google shows the Hyundai Elantra gets 7.4L/100 km , which is 10km/0.74L .

Elantra is also a 2.6L motor which isn't great for fuel economy, hence me using a modern Mazda 3 in the calculator (smaller 2.20 motor, really good fuel efficiency)

Fuel Buddy says it'll take approx 213L to drive 1 way. Let's say 500L for the round trip. Even if we're paying 1.50/L that'd be $750 round trip. $800 if the person has a heavy foot. Seeing as me and buddy are willing to pitch 400 each as it is, the gas is already more than covered. Person driving is going there for the cost of maintenance on their car.

Take 8 hour shifts driving rotating seats, I've got my licence and so does buddy that's joining.
Someone gets the back seat for 8hr to sleep, someone co-pilots for that 8hr and the other person drives 8hr, then they all rotate. Co-pilot sleeps, sleeper drives and driver goes to co-pilot. I'm an insomniac, I'll gladly take dibs on the 4 overnight drives! No hotels needed.

If you don't pack a cooler or 2 for a cross country trip, you're really doing it wrong.

CDN$1200 in fuel alone for the round trip in a car thats above average in fuel mileage.

Right now the fuel price is C$1.05/Litre where I am at, though they did seem to be lower earlier.

So if a person is considering driving their car, then the additional help in monetary compensation would really help them out. For myself, those are long days on the road, eating at Husky Truck Stops. You can get whatever you want there, but I know the showers are $10, but you can ask to get a shower thats not been cleaned yet for $5. I usually just hit up the shit-hole towns pool/gym/ice rink complex, about the same price usually. All depends on your style of road tripping. Back to the cost: There is the extra cost of the hassle of dealing with strangers and weighing the trust factor of a stranger driving someone else's car in order to save money on a C$60 shitty motel along #1 TransCanada Highway. I have seen a few Motel 6's but the cheapest are the small shit-hole towns all along the way with family run motels. Sometimes there can be a backlog at certain times of the year, I have run into this problem. Sleeping in the car is an option. The key there is to park it close to a 24/7 establishment like a 7-eleven store where if you gotta take a dump 2 minutes ago, bam your good. I'd avoid Walmarts but it is an option. Truck stops are a good choice as well. Avoid McDonalds all together, on the road one has to eat healthy. No road grease if you can help it. Most conv stores have banana's and fruit, even yogurt. Don't ever eat chicken, only beef. Stay away from Mucho Burrito as its nickname is Mucho Diaherra. Just hope you dont get pulled over and the other stranger has some big warrants. Males driving across country attracts attention.

I see $600 return with a hotel room in Langley, BC. West Country Hotel, looks good!

Warning: It is Air Canada My mistake, it is actually Air Transat, which can be a hassle too sometimes. Westjet is an extra $105 ontop of the $575 for the package deal, roundtrip air, plus one night motel stay. Westjet is my preferred airline.

That is Expedia's website BTW.

Westward Inn and Suites is an extra $8 Both in Langley. It is easy to get to Langley on BCTransit.

I think its such a great deal because LTX is during the week or what? Th-F, 17-18 or something right., July.

Ah here is the data on that price

Toronto (YYZ) to Vancouver (YVR)
Wed, 17 Jul - Thu, 18 Jul
1 Traveller

Ah i see its 27 to 28, I will check again for you!

Weekend wont be good for pricing!

Prices are the same, that is good news!

image.png.634836feabc6306d88fd190cb7a3c507.png

^^^Those are amazing prices!!!

Just the food and motel factor alone, not to mention fuel price and the time savings.

I always check Expedia first for some reason. Maybe Kayak's website may shave $50.

You can add in an Economy car rental for one day for $40, add addition days for same price, $250 auth on cc, sometimes $500 depends on the clerk. Sometimes they have $20 weekend rates, but July is peak season for them.

Midsize Toyota Prius is about $46.
Those prices are Hertz, the lowest prices from all car rental companies. Its usually a tie between Hertz and Enterprise, just depends on ease.

They also can pick you up, which is a bonus!

More interesting facts for anyone else concerned.
image.png.12b302b737c4b26779cc2f3f8ac51224.png

I still can't believe those prices I found on Expedia.ca
The hotel room alone is minimum $100, but those look like nice motels, easily $125/night easy!
Factoring in the flight both ways is $425, which is $210 one way. Which is an average low price for Alberta to Vancouver, actually usually that is $275 from AB-Van. So it looks like the time has come to fill up the confirmed airline seats for the airline companies.

OK I will leave it there.

Just alternate methods of transport.

Road Tripping is Fun. Have Fun!
