i7-4790K. Worth an upgrade?

Hi, I'm curious as to whether upgrading my i7 to a newer generation is really worth it. I occasionally do video editing but spend most of my time playing games. I also want to invest in a VR headset. I've got a GTX 1070 paired with it right now. It runs the majority of games perfectly, but some more CPU bound games, like AC Odyssey do sometimes drop FPS. Will the upgrade be worth it overall? Considering I'll need a new MB and RAM. Thank you!

If you're looking at bad performance then it is time to upgrade, but if you're satisfied then don't bother. (also AC origins is badly optimized for PC so of course anything but a top tier CPU will slow you down.) I used my 4790k and 1070 for VR, worked like a dream.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

AC Odyssey is quite dependent on memory latency, so why not try memory OC as much as possible first?

AC Odyssey. I don't think it's awful performance, just drops in a few games. Siege being another one!

I've never really tried it. A tad nervous to break anything! My memory is Crucial memory.

what model? Crucial ones back in DDR3 times are alright, not the best but not the worst either.

Yeah, managed to get it to 4.7GHz stable without changing the voltage.

Okay, my mistake. My CPU is at 4.6GHz stable. I overclocked the RAM from 1600 to 1800MHz stable (ran a prime 95 test for 8 hours without issues). I've not changed the voltage on either, do you reckon I could get more if I kept going?

that's enough. Bump the voltage to 1.65V and 2133MHz, see if that works.

The DRAM voltage, right? I'm a tad nervous with voltages, as I don't want to increase the wrong one. I'm using an MSI board if that helps.

The 4790k is a perfectly capable CPU for gaming and honestly I wouldn't upgrade unless you have a need for more cores (video editing.) 

 

Games aren't multi-threaded enough yet to want a higher core count CPU specifically for them.

It's only going to be worth upgrading if you can convince yourself that you have to do it. Do you have 8gb of ddr3 now? Just going to 16GB could make the difference. 

 

 

How hot does your cpu usually run? It may not be relevant, but I would delid and liquid metal my cpu before I plunge into spending over $500 for new memory, motherboard and cpu.
