iPhone XR Wins Best Single Camera Award

DrMacintosh
Quote

The iPhone XR doesn’t offer a dual-camera setup. It doesn’t need to. In a test performed by DxOMark, Apple’s budget-friendly iPhone earned the best overall score for any smartphone that has one lens.

Not that I think that DxOMark is a particularly valid, has integrity, or tests things that really matter....I’ll partake in the chest bumping for the XR.

Quote

DxOMark was impressed with the handling of exposure, color, detail, noise, and artifacts. The single-camera setup could rival the iPhone XS Max’s dual-camera setup, the test found. Some of the enhanced features like zoom and bokeh aren’t as good, but the overall performance in indoor and outdoor conditions matched the jumbo-size relative.

Apple claims that the iPhone XR single lens is the same as the Xs, but it would appear that Apple is giving the XR some extra software loving that they aren’t to the XS

Quote

Although the Cupertino-based company doesn’t talk about awards too often, Apple’s Philip Schiller tweeted out a link to DxOMark’s test:

Kek but JK they haven’t tested the Pixel 3 yet

Quote

It’s all wonderful for Apple, but DxOMark hasn’t completed its testing on another single-camera system that’ll likely snatch away the crown and hand it over to Google. The Pixel 3, which was released in October, stands tall as one of the best all-around smartphones. With just one lens, Google’s latest flagship can capture photos and videos in almost any environment.

Actually not really, I don’t think the Pixel 3 stands a chance against the XR in any category except maybe lowlight

The XR is better in almost every scenario in real life imo. But if Apple did rub this in Googles face, that would be great ?

Think the Xs's dual lens is for optical zoom, rather than a digital zoom as in the XR. The primary lenses are the same I believe.

I'd rather see a proper comparison between the XR and S9's camera. I somehow doubt that it's better than the one on the S9 but only a proper test can verify that. Also the Pixel 3 seems to be a strong contender...

Still waiting for DxOMark to review the Pixel 3, also has only 1 lens. Mind you, not that I trust them for a second, just am fairly interested where they'd put him.

In the selfie photo, the iPhone looks better because the face and background is brighter and the colors pretty pop

More importantly, who really cares? That crown has been meaningless for years now.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

From what I found on their website, they just said that the XR scored the highest from single-lens phones tested on their website. That's the "award"?
Also, it's not like you'd see any difference unless you were viewing those pictures on a PC because of 1,792x828 resolution at 6,1" screen size lol

And as I said, I see no mention of the S9 there (dxomark website), only the S9 Plus which obviously can't "compete" in this category because it has a second camera. I'd like to see that one compared to the XR.

Fair criticism of that particular section of the video. However overall I would say the comparisons made are pretty fair.

Also Apple has since fixed the selfie camera smoothing issues.

was about to say what about the pixel 3 but yah if they havent gotten to it yet this kinda makes sense

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Irrelevant. No flagship phone has a display capable of displaying a 12MP image in native res.

Yeah, because if you read my post and the article you’ll see that DxO Mark hasn’t finished testing everything they want to yet.

Yeah I know they did. Afaik the Pixel gets camera updates non stop, and apparently even the night sight used in day gets better results than stock, at least I remember people testing it. Quite weird.

Anywho, I will not lie, i used iPhone X and XS Max, and the camera on both is amazing. No reason to point which one is better, both of them are amazing, and I haven't used single Pixel yet. Still, based on every single review and words from die hard iPhone fans, I am not so sure that the XR is better than P3. If it actually is, It would not be too shocking as well, but I still have a feeling that the Pixel 3 is better. I wish Anandtech reviewed the iPhone XR. Trust them way more than DxOMark.

To be fair, every single time in history of Samsung the Plus/Edge model had a better camera. The S9 wouldn't really bring anything new to the table.

If the pixel is better, it can only Be in stills. Nothing in the market competes with iPhone XR/s (Max) in video thanks to the iPhone having unlimited 4K@60fps video recording, 4K@30fps with HDR which is also unlimited, stereo audio recording, and OiS vs digital OiS on the Pixel, and better slow motion settings with less compression and higher frame rates.

I have been saying for years that phone cameras are really close in competition to each other that pixel peeping is worthless. No matter what social media you post to its going to be compressed, filtered, tons of displays are not color accurate so it doesnt matter.

I am glad MKB did that to show that DXO epeen tokens dont mean anything to the people viewing your photos.

well, we all know camera's are still the best in single lens photo's.

Not necessarily. Especially in terms of dynamic range. Computational photography is insane these days.

iPhone XR/s (Max) can capture more detail in scenarios with high dynamic range than a DSLR with far less effort on the photographers end.
