Is good idea swap Phenom II for FX ?

Hi, 

i am thinking to upgrade my CPU from AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE to AMD FX6300. Is this good idea ? I using my PC for ocasionaly gaming (BF3,Dota) but i very often use MATLAB for Simulation Purposes. How much power i can get from this upgrade ?

GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3

CORSAIR 2x4GB 1333Mhz

PSU 550W

GPU MSI GTX660 2GB

Nah, just get something much more modern like the Ryzen lineup. FX is faster than Phenom II, but only in terms of core count. Per core speed is no better.

Your GPU is super weaksauce, so getting an old 6 core over an old 4 core won't really do anything for gaming.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

 

Primary PC:

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

Sell motherboard and DDR3, the cpu doesn't have any more value.

Buy a cheap AM4 motherboard and a Athlon 200ge or Ryzen 2200g and ddr4.

I would say stick with your Phenom II X4 965, and overclock it to 3.8 ~ 4.0 GHz.

Or see if you can find a Phenom II X6 1090T / 1100T, and overclock that, too.

 

FX-6300 (e.g. Bulldozer refresh) isn't going to be much of an overall improvement.

 

FX can overclock higher...Phenom II's were kind of capped at around 4.0 ~ 4.2 GHz.

 

Motherboard's 8+2 VRM can handle either, but would would personally say stick with Phenom II.

Honestly just jump straight to Ryzen. If your budget doesn't allow for it then buy second hand 1st gen parts.
