would still give my money to steam, at least they don't snob off the small linux community

Yep me too.

Linux gaming is so much better since they got involved. And they do so much investment in the Linux ecosystem, not only steam but from MESA graphics drivers to VR to the Vulkan ecosystem, then the proton stuff etc.

In the 4 years I have had my r9 290 it's like a night and day difference how much better things are. Early on things were so bad and stutters sometimes even on desktop 2d apps using the old proprietary driver, now I can play Rise Of The Tomb Raider smoothly on Mesa drivers...

The store is now open, with a modest number of games for purchasing. Most of the titles in it are listed as "coming soon".

You could say we're witnessing the Origin of affordable pc gaming.

I'm sure the leadership at Valve will need to blow off some Steam after this announcement.

how can they survive on only 12%, wasn't 30% almost non profitable

Epic makes so much money off of Fortnite alone, I'd imagine they can actually afford to take 12%.

I am already sick of having so many required applications to play my games.

There should be an app to launch and buy games from stores all in one place.

I expect that at some point, someone will devise a launcher that grants access to all your digital libraries across multiple stores.  Much like how programs such as Trillian popped up, allowing access to multiple IM clients through one interface.

Messaging is quite different to an App Store. Programs like that have been around for decades.

Let's bow down to the console master race and their centralised profiles.

There are some programs for that. I haven't tried any of them, myself.

It's certainly more complex, but the principle is the same.  Technically speaking, you can sort of already do that with Steam, setting up 3rd party games to launch from within the library manager.  I'm not talking about an alternative way to access their respective stores, just a single interface to launch games from.  The only hitch would be finding a way to stop the initiation of each company's respective launcher.  Otherwise, it kind of defeats the purpose.

We wouldn't have all the shit on Steam if Valve still curated games.

Bullshit.

At this point, the most likely reason Valve decided to stop curating their store was because it was blatantly obvious that they can't, realistically no company with a store that large can.

great more DRM bloatware in order to play games... yeah no thanks

lmao just close steam
It's being lazy at this point because you don't want to close or open a different program sometimes. Steam is a pile of absolute shit that needs a firm kick in the ass because right now they have absolute 0 motivation to better their program. It feels like patch after patch old features get left behind or are never revised and refined. The amount of silly bugs or how sluggish Steam is sometimes is a joke. Oh boo hoo, you cannot collect trading cards or show off your measly achievements to what little friends the majority of the user base has. Oh, I'm sorry, you don't want to open Steam and have to 3 times to close the EG store? Or 3 clicks for any program with games on it for that matter? You rather have Steam become more and more of a joke? Either way with your PC you act as if the EG launcher being open is going to drop your FPS by 50%. Yeah, no thanks. Rather not have a monopoly on an already shit program that many people just kind of agree to being the "best".

I had heard some rumors a while back of 3rd party launchers being developed, but hadn't followed up on them.  If these bypass the need to open each company's client (Steam, Origin, Uplay, etc) whenever a game is run, that would be perfect, though I doubt that's the case.  More likely it's basically like I mentioned before about Steam, just a way to view all your games in one single library, and running them will also launch their respective store client.

Raptr is like Xfire back in the day AFAIK. But you're adding a layer of bloat.

So even if Valve still curated Steam, we'd have the same shitty games/shovel ware on it? You don't understand what curation is do you.

Yes, because we had that when they did curate the store.

I do. I also understand that Valve cannot curate their own store worth shit. Neither can Google. Neither can Apple. Sony and Microsoft are both better with their respective consoles, but shitware still ends up on their stores as well.
