Moving from old 1080p TN monitor, need advice

paprikman

Hi, dear community.

Long story short, I have an 8-years old hp 21.5" monitor, which has TN matrix, viewing angles are not that good, though it's not a big deal for me. I've spotted recently that some colours are washed-out (can't see some tints at different angles). And sometimes I feel like I don't have enough space for work.

I usually work for about 12 hours a day as a programmer, play some games at the weekend (no AAA-ish stuff though), do some photo editing from time to time. I have a gtx 1060 with i5 2500.

That's why I'm looking towards some 1440p IPS panel, but my system won't handle gaming at that resolution anyways. The budget is about $ 500 (less is preferred).

Has anyone dealt with that stuff? I don't feel like getting a regular 1080p IPS display now.

Thanks!

What 1060 is it (in terms of vram)? If it's a 6 GB you will be able to run games at 1440p, just not at the max settings. I have a 1060 6gb and it's running a 1440p 144hz monitor. If I were you I would go with a 27" 1440p IPS screen and keep your old one as a secondary monitor. There should be plenty 1440p monitors within your budget.

Hi, thanks for your response!

This is the MSI gtx 1060 6gb.

Yes, I've thought about getting 27" ips and keeping the current one in landscape for secondary stuff.

Do you have an IPS display? I find 1440p 144hz ips panels quite expensive.

for that budget, you can even get  a photoshop monitor.

it's been awhile but iirc this unit used to have a similar panel as the pa272w

and one search on ebay turned up these for the pa241w

there used to be dell and hp models that all have the same panels for photoediting, i'll update the model numbers later, you should be able to get them for under 200 used.

dell's current model, additional research needed

I recommend making a choice between wide gamut vs high refresh first then look into the model you want to get.

Thanks, but I'm totally unlucky when it comes to buying used stuff, so I don't really want to consider it.

Yeah, I've also spotted that some monitors have same panels, though I would like to test them personally before buying. Right now I'm thinking about one 27" hp 'elite display'.

Yeah I went for a va panel since ips 144hz is way out of my budget (my budget was +/- 350€). I kept my old ips panel as secondary monitor, and I can use that in case I need to do any colour critical work.
