LGA2066 CPU that in general is the best overclocker?

I thought my HEDT desktop died today so I started looking at upgrading to a 2066 platform and now the bug is set, but I am googling a bunch to see if any of the lower tier chips (lower than the x980xe) are perhaps better overclockers due to having fewer cores. 

 

Money-aside, if you were to build a rig around LGA2066 for overall beast-mode power, are the 7980xe / 9980xe hands down the best options? I'll probably keep the Titan XP SLI with this since I'm waiting for ray tracing to mature to a playable-at-100hz-or-higher level.

Depends on whether you need the cores, if not you'll probably be much better off with the i9 9900X as it will overclock more with less and 10c/20t.

 

Honestly though if you don't need the PCI-e lanes and quad channel the i9 9900K is a better pick, 8x PCI-e 3.0 still suffices for the SLI setup and you can have your nvme off the chipset 4x.

 

Have in mind how Skylake-X and Skylake-X Refresh uses Mesh which can be as bad as Infinity Fabric for the most part, Intel really only is keeping its single thread superiority nowadays thanks to Ring Bus on the mainstream... aside the frequency yeah.

 

But if you only want to have high scores on benchmarks not minding to over-pay the Gamer Nexus review showed that with the ONLY difference between the 7980XE and 9980XE is the former being soldered and that  they actually perform Identically when you control temperatures on both.

Thanks - I already have a 9900k rig as you see in my sig   I'm not asking which 2066 CPU is best on a budget, just what will be the best overclocker and/or overall raw performance. as in my sig, my current HEDT rig is a 6900k @ 4.5 ghz... and although I figured out why it wasn't turning on (PSU 24-pin cable was loose on the PSU end), it's bugging me that my mainstream rig runs circles around the HEDT rig in anything outside of games which are not CPU-bound and also scale well with SLI.

 

Perhaps another approach - let's say you have to build a rig on LGA2066, it needs at least 12 cores, 44 PCIE lanes, and is going to  be 50/50 gaming and multi-threaded stuff like running VMs. 

Given those restrictions, is the 7980xe still the best choice in terms of overall power?

Wrong way around.. The Latter is soldered. (9980XE).

The former uses normal TIM (7980XE)

It'd be the 9980XE because it's soldered so you don't need to delid your super hyper expensive CPU in order to extract maximum cooling.

 

Although if you successfully delid with liquid metal and all the most enthusiast stuff possible, the 7980XE might actually be better... it's hard to say it for sure like I stated both are the same processor, the IHS being soldered or not really is the only difference.

Thank you    I think the 7980xe would be better for me in that case - from what I'm seeing from Der8auer and Gamers Nexus it sounds like a delidded 7980xe with liquid metal TIM runs cooler than the 9980xe. 

 

Now to decide how much damage this upgrade is going to do to my wallet...

Both Der8auer and Steve from Gamers Nexus found that the 9980XE had worse thermals vs a Delidded + LM TIM 7980XE.

yep that's what I said, 7980xe delidded with LM runs cooler than the 9980xe (even though it has solder TIM).

I currently run a 7820x. I was thinking of maybe going to the 9920x. It has the second highest base clock, and matches the best turbo boost scores in the range. With 12 cores it is a nice little bump over my current CPU. But because it isn't jam packed with as many cores as the 9980XE, it may offer better OC'ing headroom. Hard to tell until some more reviews are done of this latest HEDT release.

Thanks - makes sense. I'm still flip-flopping between a 7980xe and the 7960x because it doesn't look like the 80 does much better than the 60 even in heavily multi-threaded workloads, the 60 (at least back when everyone was testing them) did better than the 80 in a number of benchmarks, and they seemed to overclock about the same, with the 60 having slightly lower temps and power consumption with 2 fewer cores.

 

...and it's $1700 versus the 80's $2000. Money's not the end-all, but I don't want to spend $300 if it won't make $300 of difference, if that makes sense.

 

Just pricing things out right now - to do the upgrade I'll need CPU, MB, monoblock, and Der8auer delid tool (keeping RAM, SSDs, graphics cards, might swap in a Corsair AX1600 PSU, already have Conductonaut liquid metal from when I delidded an 8086k). 

I see a 'used' Rampage VI Extreme for about $550 on Amazon warehouse deals, the monoblock is $165, Der8auer delid tool about $45, and CPU will be either 1700 or 2k so this at least warrants some deep thought first.

Well after checking every youtube video, forum post, and benchmark graph I could find I went with the 7960x (16 core). Since it will be 50/50 gaming/productivity I looked at how it fared in both categories against the 7980xe and it was basically equal or better for gaming, and equal or just slightly worse for most productivity things (I'll mainly be using those extra cores for simultaneous VMs). Hoping that it can overclock to 4.9 or 5 ghz after delidding but we'll find out next week.

 

Hopefully the swap from this old 6900k goes well!

CPU arrived today - I delidded, applied LM, got the CPU waterblock installed etc. Just running it stock for a day or two to make sure temps are good. Idle is 26c-28c per core, just getting things set up again no cores have risen above 41c. Hopefully that's a good sign lol
