HDD Just died overnight. Anything I can do?

Hey, my 250GB 2.5" WD Black HDD just died randomly and is there anything I can do that doesn't cost a kidney to recover the files? They are not accessible in windows and it sounds like its heads are stuck but fully spins up

Try access it from live Linux? I had few bad HDDs that was accessible in Linux but not Windoze.

250gb hdd, i bet its very old, it should be dead by now if you have used it continuously.

Continuosly for around 4 years but I have much older drives and they still rock

4 years not that old, when was it produced? There's a manufacturing date in the label.

You may bought it 4 years ago but it maybe produced longer, just sitting at the end of the shelf.

Regular hdd should last 5 years minimum under regular condition, laptop hdd is shorter since they are mobile and can have much bumps and shock.

Stuck head can be remedied with a light shock on the side, but do this if you're ready to loose all the data.

If it succeed, backup all your data as soon as possible, get ready to scrap the disk anytime, as this is only temporary fix.

Although I didn't lose any important data. I lost rare GTA SA mods, old WoWs, part of my steam library and my entire download folder which had tons of mods for other games and useful applications. Maybe even some linked stuff from my C\: drive which can crash my system if I try to attempt to reach it, but that's how it goes

Yup. I lost two drives with music collections before I started keeping backups.

Now my data exists in four locations.

Too bad for me. Backup utility costs money (aka backup HDDs in atomic bomb proof cases) *not rly
And I am a student and asking for that kind of sh*t on Christmas will make me get 1 more pair of black short socks cuz I am 19...

Two are WD and SG 4TB external drives I bought used for $40 CAD each.
