If you absolutely must work with this, one needs to be in the "pointy" side. If anything, this is to make sure the CPU is firmly pressed against the socket and not moving around. However I'd imagine heat sink pressure would fill in what cover plate can't do since Apple in various computers uses an LGA socket without the cover plate.
