Bottlenecked system, wanting to upgrade but need advice

Current PC: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Yose/saved/#view=7p6sZL

Case: NZXT H400i MicroATX

PSU: EVGA - SuperNOVA nex 650w 80+

Motherboard: Asus - Z170M-PLUS Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

RAM: Kingstong HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2x8) 2133

GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 Ti FTW2

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2 GHz

Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper T4

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 120 GB, WD Blue 1tb 7200RPM

Ever since my GPU upgrade a few months ago, I haven't been happy with the performance that I've been getting in games (such as GTA 5, Battlefield 5, etc...) with what I was expecting. I believe it's because of a bottleneck my CPU is currently producing and I'm looking to upgrade.

An ideal board for a micro atx build would be the asus z370-G but they're currently out of stock on Amazon, Newegg, and my local Micro Center and I have no idea when or if they will even be back in stock.

Ideally I'd like the Asus z370-G to pair with an i7-8700k since I also have a Kraken X62 that I was gifted not too long ago. If I were to go this route, would I need to get faster RAM?

Considering it's hard to get a hold of the z370-g currently, the only other option I was able to narrow down was the MSI Z370M Mortar motherboard. It meets all of my needs but only reason I haven't thrown money at it yet is because of the obligatory red MSI detailing that comes with it. I'd really prefer neutral colors or even white if anything, but I've spent a few days looking for other boards and with micro-atx not being the most popular form factor, I'm now stuck at a roadblock

Yesterday I discovered that there are also B and H series boards alongside the Z, but in general terms I've learned (from gamersnexus) that B is generally for businesses, and H is for budget builds so I'm not sure if these are viable options either for gaming nor do I know which CPUs are compatiable.

Thanks for reading!

I would just look for a used i7 6700K or 7700K on Ebay.

I fully agree, I'm currently running an overclocked 6700K paired with a heavily OC'd 1080 FTW Hybrid and it's an ideal combo for 1440p gaming on Ultra settings. This is the cheapest upgrade route for OP and will eliminate any performance issues caused by the 6500, it should also last for a few years before an upgrade of the entire platform.

7700K's can run on Z170 boards with a BIOS update.

A BIOS update would make it compatible :) Z170 and Z270 support the same CPUs, you just need to have an updated BIOS on the Z170 board.

I thought about this but was hoping to go for a more futureproof solution with the 8700k. I think with all of this input now, I'll stick with the z170 board and do a BIOS update, pick up a 7700k, and then install my Kraken x62. Thanks everyone!!

I forgot to mention, is my RAM okay or would something faster be better? Or is the performance gain negligible?

For a 7700K? Well, it's okay but I'd try overclocking it, you may reach 2600 or even 2888MHz for instance and that should give you a couple FPS in more CPU-heavy titles.
