  1. Respectfully I disagree. Not everybody cares about power efficiency, the open source linux phone people for instance want an Open Source friendly SOC that isn't straight out of 2013. They could really do with 2-10x more performance cos they're stuck with only 4x A53s with a 2012 era GPU.
  2. Manually fixing GTA cos for some reason it doesn't want to work for me.

  3. Not gonna lie, I really hope 6700XT becomes my next GPU 😄.

Either that or buying a 6800.

  4. As far as I can tell, Big Media are lobbying for this cos they're not happy with advertising revenues from putting ADs on their website. They're claiming it's not enough money for them so they want to make more money.
  5. After a lot of screwing around I finally have a working desktop rig again.

Installing the NHD15 was a real pain in the ass. Not sure I’d willingly do that again.

I've installed a fair share of Noctua coolers. Please enlighten me about what's a PITA, I must have been doing it wrong all along.

@Meganter agree, I installed a D14 on AM4 and it was ez pz. Better than any AIO even.

The lack of space there is when installing the fan(s) onto the cooler itself. How sharp the fins are also doesn't help.

The instructions also don't tell you to do some things before installing the cooler and the fans which leads to either a really bad time or removing the cooler and doing the things before then installing the cooler again and installing the fan.

  6. PC Building Simulator: Client needs you to overclock an i7-8086K to 5.3GHz

Me: Finally manages to get it 5.3GHz stable at 1.8 volts (no that's not a typo).

PC Building Simulator: Client: It runs so damn hot why did you do this!!!111 Surprised Pikachu Face.

    Me: -_-

  7. Replacement CPU is here, new CPU cooler is here, and new case fans are here.

The replacement CPU I got after the refund for the 3900X came in since the 3900X was out of stock. It cost me £30 more for the 3900XT but it's available.

New CPU cooler is Noctua NH D15 cos I'm not gonna be using the H100i v2 since it's resulting in bent pins on my CPU and also stupidly bad thermals.

And the new case fans are cos I needed new ones so I got a 2 pack of Corsair ML120.

@FloRolf Idk. the CPU gets stuck to the AIO and then taking the AIO out rips the CPU out of the socket.

    3. FloRolf

      FloRolf

But that can happen with every cooler can it not?

Anyways, good decision going the the D15 anyways as I feel like my H100i GTX doesn't hold up to the 3900X good enough.

      AluminiumTech

@FloRolf idk to be honest, It's happening a whole hell of a lot with me lately so I don't know if it's me causing it, if the motherboard is causing it, or if something else is causing it. I mean the AIO cooler was broken anyways so replacing it is not the end of the world.

  8. REEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Elon Chan has sent his minions to download Signal and the Signal org people are running as fast as they can to add server capacity but so far is temporarily down.

Also obligatory: I used Signal before it was cool :D.

How long until Signal becomes just another mainstream service? I hope it doesn't, but I've lived through this a fair number of times and this is inevitable.

@ARikozuM wdym? until it turns into the thing it swore to destroy?

I mean they're keeping it as is and probably will for as long as possible.

Twitter before them. Telegram before them. It’s inevitable for platforms to succumb to moneyed interests.

  9. I respectfully disagree. Nvidia walked right into this one. They could have just called their top mobile GPU "RTX 3070 SUPER for Laptops" or "RTX 3070 Ti for Laptops" and be done with it. We're not comparing a Ti or a Super to a vanilla chip. This is literally taking a 3070 desktop chip with a few extra cores and calling it a 3080 for Laptops with a slightly reduced TDP and clockspeed. This is the equivalent of Intel calling the 10980HK the "10900K for Laptops" instead and keeping the same core count and clockspeed. Neither of them are the same product. Not even
  10. Moore's law Is Dead in his video yesterday said that AIBs threatened to cause problems for Nvidia if Nvidia sold the 3060 for the originally intended MSRP of sub $300 with 6GB VRAM because the sub $300 MSRP would not be high enough for AIBs to sell cards for a profit. So Nvidia compromised and turned the 3060 Ultra with 12GB VRAM into the 3060 with 12GB VRAM for $329. AIBs are still pissed at Nvidia and are still threatening to cause problems for Nvidia as far as I understand it from yesterday's video.
  11. If this came to market, I'd probably actually buy one. I have to say though one of the biggest problems still yet to be addressed with masks is how do you drink water or any liquids with a mask on. You right now have to take the mask off to drink water and then put the mask back on.
  12. Nvidia is saying RTX 3060 is 2x faster than GTX 1060 in rasterisation.

    12GB GDDR6 for $329.

Essentially youre getting 2070 performance for 2060 price -_-. What a joke. Performance per dollar is barely an improvement over 2060.

Isn't the PS5 RTX2080ish in terms of performance? It doesn't seem that far-fetched if you take into account that the benchmarks are probably somewhat cherry picked.

    3. AluminiumTech

      AluminiumTech

@PCGuy_5960 Okay but how do you square 3060 being 2x faster than 1060 (e.g. 1080 or 1080Ti performance) and being 1.3x faster than PS5's basically RTX 2080 performance?

    4. PCGuy_5960

      PCGuy_5960

In some crazy ray-tracing scenario, it wouldn't be impossible. Nvidia's RT is quite a bit better than AMD's and Nvidia seems to think that everyone plays with RT on.

  13. Seems that Qt decided to follow through on their threat to punish open source users in favor of paying customers.

LTS (Long Term Support) releases for Qt are now only available commercially meaning Qt 5 at this point is essentially commercial only if you want to use a version without security vulnerabilities.

I do hope KDE and others do fork the project and split it off from the Qt source cos this is ridiculous.

Yes, Qt 6 does exist now but it is severely lacking in the features available and will continue to be behind Qt 5 until Qt 6.2 is released which itself will also be an LTS release.

    https://www.techradar.com/news/key-open-source-project-makes-critical-change-locks-out-community-developers

Edit: And just to add, I know Qt has to make money but surely there are better ways than this. They've already made all new projects dual licensed under GPLv3 and Commercial license as opposed to dual licensing LGPL and Commercial license. And something tells me they won't stop and they'll eventually just try to kill off the open source version entirely if they can.
