I wanted to share a big development in my life with all of my fellow folders.

I don't normally share things like this because it always seems like bragging or something, but all of your collective positivity over the past year that I have been part of the group has really helped me so...

I am a medical physicist. Our job is to perform quality assurance on linear accelerators used for radiation cancer treatments, generate said treatment plans, and provide technical assistance in the treating of the patients receiving those treatments. My training included going to grad school for my master's degree (after leaving my high school teaching position of 10 years), followed by a 2-year residency, and a 3 part board exam process culminating in a 3+ hour oral exam. In the midst of all that, my wife and I moved three times, bought our first house, had two daughters, and braved a global pandemic.

I am happy to say that I recently found out that I passed my oral exam on the first try and am now officially a Diplomat of the American Board of Radiology (DABR).

As I said before, thank you all for your positivity and comradery over the past year. Without knowing it, you all offered me a respite from things and helped me maintain some semblance or sanity. I'm happy to call you all friends.

    Cheers and fold on!

With the resurgence of mining perhaps now is the time to request separate sub forms for mining and distributed computing.

even if we have to walk away from all the existing content getting rid of the “noise” world be worth it IMHO

I have officially joined the F@H team this morning. Been meaning to do it for a long time, just never did. Been folding for an hour or so already:

Thank you! I've been a long time viewer (Watched probably half or so of the videos), but just decided to take the plunge.

Why are GPUs more so much more efficient than CPUs in this case? I've seen the F@H viewer, but I have no idea what F@H actually does other than max out your hardware and that it's good for contributing to society/science. Is it because it's actually a GPU process being translating into a CPU process as more people have CPUs than dedicated GPUs? I like to know the 'why' behind things. Haha.

I was getting ready to go for a 2060 SUPER, but I'm not sure. The prices of everything are nuts, so I might hold off for a bit. That 3090 though is insane. It does more in 6 hours then I've done in almost 6 months (I took the 200,000 out that my MBP did in 2 hours). Woah....

Lar Systems did a great job with that website. I also really like the extremeoverclocking.com folding subdomain website as well. Very cool! Both these I found here in the LTT Forums.

I'm not sure how threads work in a CPU. I've been researching it, but don't fully understand it quite yet. I thought PCIe that if you had (usually) 16x lanes for your GPU, you'd be fine on bandwidth. Is that incorrect?

I'll make sure to check out that thread you linked. Thank you!

You'll have to forgive the delay, just spent the last god knows how long chasing this little mouse round the living room to save it from the cat.

Well I won't stop folding apart from some maintenance downtime, I'd be really happy if you guys joined me. The march of scientific progress rests for no ladle or gentlespoon

After the event is over I will be building a dedicated folding machine named Beefeater, a British made machine full of gpu muscle, and rich in protein 😁.

All the parts have been ordered, so hopefully I wont have to wait too long for them to arrive. The only parts I can't order are the extra gpu's, hopefully I can get them asap, but I'm not waiting on Nvidia or AMD to get it up and running, these cards can be added later.

I will try my best to make an interesting build log with pretty pictures 🙂.

This is what it's all about, good work guys!

    Science Paper:

    TLDR:
F@H Research aids in figuring out how the Covid "spikes" work, they simulated them to lean they retract to hide from the immune system and deploy to infect cells.

"The spikes hide from the immune system by folding up on themselves to protect their receptor-binding sites, kind of like how a turtle pulls into its shell. Eventually, though, they would have to open up to find a potential host."

This finding provides a path to anti-viral development that could identify / bind to the virus in the retracted spike state so it can not deploy.

Linus gets a mention near the end for providing early day support via the 100TB work server.

I was really looking forward to gaming on my new 3090, but if I do I might drop a few places in the event.

Damn these first world problems, they are making my life hell 😂, I would buy a cheap card to game on, but gods knows I would just end up folding on that also.

Just an FYI, I will be unavailable for much of today due to personal circumstances, I have responded to all outstanding messages and I will be popping in from time to time if possible. If you need anything in the meantime @marknd59 has full capability to check entries and the like.

Thank you for your understanding as always!

Mine never go over 6000 no matter what I do.
!60k is quite low... I use to get 250k to 300k but yesterday, they changed how F@H deal with CUDA and I'm now closer to 350k-450k.
If you have and older PC like me (i7 2600), I would suggest not to fold with the CPU and close every other running programs, especially your browser. The CPU can't keep up otherwise.  It has enough cores but there seem to be a bottleneck somewhere (DDR3?). This used to keep my usage (60%) and PPD (150k) quite low.

my brain is yuuuuge, I am very smart, possibly the smartest, nobody can fix computers like me. I just say “person, man, woman, camera, tv”, and it’s done, working, like a miracle, I hear very good things about these miracles
