It's not a very large upgrade in performance, but you can sell your 1600 for most of the cost of a 1600 af

So it's worth it in that regard. However if you were after a more significant performance bump, I'd aim for the 3600

i7-2600 might be a compelling option, if you find one for super cheap it's almost as good as the 3770

Coolers are designed to have a very constant resistance in the screws until you bottom out, where it'll go from requiring effort being very difficult. If you applied very consistent force until it has resistance, you did it right.

to be fair, my L5506 at 2.133 has made an impressive showing (in my opinion). I think I would be satisfied by a 2.600 boost or so, and something cheap with hyperthreading is sure to go a long way. Maybe that $3 X5550 I saw earlier is what I need, I'll see.

I've heard that A320 and slow ram should be avoided for Ryzen, because it hurts CPU performance. Also, A320 are all super cheap motherboards, can't be good if you want to get a better processor in the future.

Yee. If you cannot OC, go for a '70 or higher tier CPU in the W/X series, they're usually the ones with a 3.06Ghz or higher base clock. Anything much below 3Ghz nowadays can be rather painful. If you can BLCK OC, then an X5650 is a damn good value, they'll typically do 4, maybe 4.2Ghz without too much work, and that's the sweet spot for these chips most of the time.

X5650 - X5670 - X5675 - X5680 - X5690. There may have been an X5660 as well. The '50 is usually the cheapest, the '70 is a very good value, the '75 is usually the best for overclocking. They're not a noticeably worse bin than a '90, and the '90s are expensive and rare enough that IMO they should be left for people with locked chipsets such as 5520 boards (other than the SR-2) and 2009 Mac Pros.

There's a W series as well, I know of the W3670 (I have one), W3680 I think, and W3690. These aren't as good as the X series it seems, BUT the W3690 specifically can be used in boards that do not support westmere due to having... gulftown microcode IIRC. The W3670 is still a Westmere-EP microcode chip so it plain will not work unless the board supports Westmere-EP, in which case an X series CPU is usually better (confirmed this with my own sample on my V1.0 EVGA boards). The '90 is also cheaper than the i7s so if you need a gulftown/nehalem chip then it's a good choice.

All the Hexacores, both Xeons and i7s, are 32nm chips AFAIK, never seen a 45nm higher than 4 cores. Speaking of quad cores, E series Xeons are low power variants, I have a few quads from that line. They're extremely cheap, good throwaway chips if you just wanna blast voltage through them with no care for longevity, they're also 32nm chips.

The OG i7 quad cores are 45nm chips, which usually aren't the best overclockers. That's flipped totally on its head if you get a golden chip though, golden 45nm chips can crush the 32nm ones easily. I forget who it was here who figured that out, I think @Ground? One of the madlads whose gone through probably 100+ of these chips seeing how the bins are, I think we have a couple of them here 😎.

If you're just trying to pinch for dollars and are shooting for insanely low cost there's a few cpus which are pretty interesting.

The E5649($7 and X5670($14) would probably be the best bang for your buck in hex core westmeres. There's also some quad core westmeres like the X5672($10) which should be pretty attractive at a lower TDP or if you're only shooting for the absolute highest fps in an older game.

Nehalem stuff is so cheap that the only real way to increase it's value is to drill a hole in it for a keyring and to sell it as a keychain. I think Nehalem and Westmere perform the same clock for clock so this W3565 might be a really good value if you're only shooting for FPS.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-SLBEV-Xeon-W3565-3-2GHz-8M-Socket-1366-4-Core-CPU-Processor-LGA1366/312607695766

Your L5502 is pretty much among the worst in socket, $10 could really give you a huge bump in performance. Overall though the X5675 of course offers some of the best silicon for overclocking with enough multipliers so you can adjust them however your setup responds to the best.

If your board can overclock, that'll be your best option.

Otherwise, you could look around Ebay for an X5650 or another hexacore Xeon(assuming those are supported by your BIOS).

HP Z400 is technically Intel X58(actually it's 5520 but we don't discriminate). HEDT only means "High End Desktop".

Generally speaking, if it's an Intel server socket, it's fair game. LGA 771, 1366, 2011-1, 2011-3, 2066, 1567, so forth.

Hey, it's me, Donut Dan! Not like you would know who I am, since I just joined haha. Well, it's been a long time coming, but I can finally count myself as one of the Illustrious PC master race! I don't really have the resources to devote to a properly high end gaming PC like many enthusiasts, but along the same vein as the YouTuber RandomGaminginHD, sometimes you just have to make do, and be satisfied with good enough. Therefore, the specifications are as follows:

    CPU: Xeon L5506.
    Motherboard: HP Z400 workstation motherboard.
GPU: Gigabyte RX 570 4GB (more on that later).
RAM: 3x2GB DDR3 1333, two ECC and one regular.
    PSU: Corsair TX650.
SSD: Fattydove Racing 240GB (thanks Linus).
    Case: Original DELL® Cardboard box™

Ladies and gentlemen, I present: the Trash Beauty...

Now a few things may jump out at you first. One of the biggest eyesores, depending on how you look at it, would be the 24 pin extension. Now if you've ever worked with one of these motherboards, you may know that the 24 pin is actually a proprietary connector. The physical layout is identical, but the wiring is not the same, and you WILL kill something with a standard PSU. The adapter I found is super cheap and seems to work quite nice, while also not looking too terrible. The ram, of course, is all mismatched. The center stick (which has to be there, because otherwise the motherboard will say it fails to function and deactivates it) is some random DDR3 I found in some E-waste, and the two sticks accompanying i are the cheapest DDR3 I could find on eBay, and they are both ECC, which I don't think matters because I believe the lack of ECC on the center stick deactivates that feature.

In addition to that, you'll see that the PCIe 6+2 connector has conspicuously been left as a mere 6 pin connector. Well, a friend of mine purchased this RX 570 off eBay, and whaddya know, the thing's busted. Any load at the default settings will have the PC immediately blackscreen, and it has to be restarted. The warranty was attached to a non-US serial number, so Gigabyte won't service it. Therefore, I've turned the power limits and voltage way down, which has actually made this GPU able to render 3D scenes once more.

All in all, this build was an absolute steal. The CPU and cooler were from a friend recycling an old server, the PSU was being replaced, so I got all that for free, the SSD was a delightful cheap chinesium treat, and the motherboard was an absolute bargain at about $30, which is really something for an old 1366 board. But enough about that, how does she game?

First things first, obviously the issues won't go away immediately. Before nuking the sliders in radeon settings all the way to minimum, I tried a partial downclock. No dice, as you can see something from the video memory to the graphics chip is dead as a doornail. With some more direct tuning, I can get actual renders to work!  Behold, the beautiful experience of Halo: Reach, anywhere from 15 to 60 fps! Overwatch is somehow a lot more comfortable, ruinning close to 60 consistently with occasional drops to the low 40s, which is fine by me. All in all, hard to complain with a PC that cost less than $100.
