Dutch_Master reacted to mariushm in AMD prevents motherboard manufacturers from releasing beta BIOS for Ryzen 5000 on X370
    I'm fine with it.
AMD never promised support for x370, and officially only promised support for 5xx series chipsets then agreed on b4xx chipsets due to consumer demand.
If they let Asrock make updates for x370, every x370 motherboard buyer would put pressure on the other manufacturers and ask for bioses and complaint that they're greedy and don't release bioses to make more money out of new boards, which is bad.

Most x370 motherboards had small size bios chips, which can't even contain the microcode and all the stuff needed for new ryzen processors, so they'd probably have to drop support for ryzen 1xxx processors and a lot of those boards don't have bios flashback feature, which means if something fails during bios update, you're screwed.

Also, the x370 boards - majority of them - have bad VRMs ... bad as in poor heatsinks and only 4-6 phases with average mosfets ... decent for up to a 8 core cpu, but forget about a 12-16 core cpu on it.
A lot of manufacturers weren't sure about how good AM4 processors would be and they preferred to focus on paying SLI licenses and fancy heatsinks and rgb instead of vrm and io features.

Dutch_Master reacted to porina in Rumour: AMD no longer launching Zen 3+ or any refreshed Ryzen CPUs in 2021
This is one of the more annoying parts in the community, where rumours are treated as facts and outrage expressed when a product that doesn't exist gets changed in some way. To best of my knowledge, AMD has never referenced Zen 3+ existing.

It is a big question. They have the potential to put it on AM4 by having different IOD versions to the same chiplets, but as I speculated in another thread, they might have to do something different with Infinity Fabric to cope with the higher possible ram bandwidth otherwise the ram increases would be pointless. I hadn't considered backward compatibility in that sense. If an AM4 version were to exist, I don't think I'd want a crippled version like that.

Many years ago I had a lawyer client, and one day she was on the phone talking with her husband in a language I couldn't pin down.
I enjoy trying to figure out what people speak that's non-english, so I listened in. I hear touches of German, some Dutch, maybe a bit of French, but every time I thought I"d had it figured out, it'd change.

I asked her when she got off the phone what she was speaking, because I heard touches of all kinds of languages.

    Afrikaans. Made total sense then.

    You can buy server hardware.
Plus prebuilt servers almost always use proprietary parts, that  can sometimes be a problem.
But... in this situation I would recommend a prebuilt; most likely a supermicro.

You're better off with integrated graphics than a GT 710. That card is made for people who either need additional ports for many monitors, or people who run chips with no iGPU.

I'd just do a clean install on the SSD and copy over important data from that HDD. Boot times really are different between the two.

Do you have any preference in monitor resolution? I'm assuming at your budget you'll be okay with 1080p. Do you have any size limitations for the display (e.g. <27")?

Yes both the i5 and i7 have iGPUs.

Consider upgrading to an i5 or even i7 if that fits in your budget. Assuming those have onboard graphics as well. Also, consider a low(er) tier used GPU.

Use a Linux Live-CD to perform a file system check. Be careful though, using Win-OS to perform that check may wipe the data off the drive, so first of all, get another drive and make a direct copy of all data.

First, Thank You for your service. It's much appreciated, but not often enough communicated 😉

As for your build, I'd suggest going AMD. You can probably re-use much of your current setup, but mainboard, CPU and RAM need replacing. The 1070 is good enough until GPU prices return to more normal levels. Predicted some time in 2022 😧

If you choose AMD, get an X570 mainboard, a 5600X(T) CPU and 16GB DDR4-3200 memory. Should be yours for under a Grand total.

These people went through a lot, just for doing their jobs. They have my utmost respect for being able to cope with this for as long as they were forced to. I can't even begin to fathom the mental and financial implications that this would have had on these people.

There are many unanswered questions, not just in terms of the justice system, but also in terms of the accountability of the firms behind these insanely consequential errors.

(I see this as tech news, they were implicated because of dodgy software and the company's unwillingness to admit they were wrong.)

It includes an OS preinstalled. Stick to that, as it has proprietary NVIDIA drivers, and it would definitely be painful to find them elsewhere (that is, for their specific graphics chip and for ARM architecture).

Random barely related story:  I had a silicon design course where we were tasked with doing silicon-level design of logic gates.  and, xor, nor etc (where you're drawing the gates like a 2d model with various feature sizes).  Being my normal procrastinating self I started late and ended up really only having time to do the design for and, or, and I think an inverter gate.  And then I had the realization that all the more advanced logic gates can be made using just those 3 basic gates.   There was a lot of copy pasting and inefficiency of wiring together waaaay too many and and or gates.

Think I got a B or something with a "wtf" from the professor.  Ayyy you didn't specify how tight the designs had to be.
