    I'm running at Balanced. Also, ambient temp was around 20C.

    Idle Temp: 38C Tdie, 34C Die average
    Load Temp: 74C Tdie, 71C Die average
    Idle MHz: 2.9GHz
    Load Boost MHz: 4.95GHz (Max Boost), 4.45GHz (All Core)
    Cooler: Scythe Fuma 2
     
    Numbers were taken with HWInfo64 - Task Manager never reported lower than 4GHz at idle

    5900X is the better chip overall. The cost to performance is better and it can boost higher and perform better core for core than the 5950X, once undervolted and with PBO limits dialed in.
     
    The only benefit to the 5950X is the extra 8 threads, which does matter for things like programming, as that's 8 more simultaneous builds, but practically, isn't really going to make enough of a difference to warrant the extra cost.
     
    I'm also a developer and I went with the 5900X. It's a beast. I'm getting over double the multicore performance I had with the 3700X.

    if i add 270 (33% more cores) to 839 aud, that'd be 1109, so the extra 50 premium is just for the binned chip, there's always been a premium for the 5950x, so it's up to you when to pull the trigger, they seem to be always in stock now.

    there was a time when the 5900x was 529 and 5950x was 799, and it heavily skewed toward the 5900x, now at 589 and 819 it's probably the 5950x, im waiting for it to fall back to 799, whats a couple of months after a year of waiting.

    Well if you can find it and afford it the 5950x is faster, it has better binned CCXs and more cores.

    They are super easy to cool at stock. A 130w tdp x5690 is light years easier to cool than a 130w Vermeer. X5690 @ about 250-300w is pretty comparable 😄

    Yes the  2x 4U Noctua NH-U9DX i4 CPU Cooler For Xeon Sockets [U9DXi4] will be ok in Winter but maybe not an Australian summer.
     
    If the 2x X5690's (130W each) are too hot I will move back to the 2x E5645's (80W each)
     
    Given the NH-U9DX i4's were running at 60% (still quiet) this was a good result

    Yeah they are nice to run.. my x5690 runs cool until you pass 1.4v or 4400MHz, after that it turns into a dragon

    Lapping wont do much.. once you get to a certain point its going to run hot whether you like it or not.. they care nothing for your ocd 😄
     
    Talk to @ShrimpBrime and he can hook you up with a better method 😎
     
    I know you said no overclocking.. but you cannot own that chip without kickin it right in the corez at least once.

    Well I'd just do a clean up, basically take the nickel plate off the top and that's about it. Just because nickel is a poor conductor compared to copper. 
     
    Doubt this lad wants to do a de-lid. (my "better method" 🙂 )
    I shimmied the IHS plate off with my model vice back and forth. 
    Eventually broke the solder bond. 
    Direct Die cooling with a i7 930 yielded about 200mhz max clocks (shut down cores and threads cpu-z validation)
    Not quite as much gain with benching and usability, maybe a 50mhz increase in performance. 
     
    They do quite like the voltage though. Start getting hot maybe around 1.7-1.75v on my Geothermal loop. 
     
    Sometime in what ever future arrives, I'll maybe lap the 980 do some testing then delid it. 
    But perhaps I'll do some LN instead, leaving the IHS plate on as it won't really matter with this sort of cooling.
    Not that any of this is relevant to this thread in particular, the OP plans not to overclock.

    That's fine. As I said the thermal paste will fill those scratches in.

    Thats really not a problem, I wouldn't worry. Those scratches are verry shallow as they haven't even broke the nikel plating on the chips

    The point of thermal paste is to fill in these scratches, lol. I highly doubt lapping would make a big enough difference to make it worth the risk.

    Scratches aren't gonna affect temps, I wouldn't bother lapping them.

    they would have to be sure the board doesn't have permanent back plates on it , if it does then it would have to use a cooler compatible with it. I just use a pair of supermicro coolers

    SLC cache. The E16 drives (MP600) have full-drive SLC caching which means the entire drive of TLC is capable of SLC mode. SLC mode takes up three times the capacity of TLC. Therefore, the SLC eventually has to be emptied and converted to TLC via folding which is a much slower state. You can see that here for example. Note that this is one reason I caution people against saying the E16 drives are faster than the 970 EVO Plus. In any case, the drive should naturally empty the SLC in the background when idle and return to its faster state, although I've known drives with large SLC caches to get wonky sometimes enough to require a secure erase. Keep in mind that as such drives get fuller they're more likely to exhibit this behavior as the cache is smaller and there's fewer blocks with which to work.

    I enabled DOCP and selected the DOCP 3200 settings in the drop down right below it and it auto set a new recommended voltage of 1.35, that still didnt post so I kept upping the voltage by .005 and after a few times it posted just fine at 3200MHz. Might take like 4-5 bumps (minimum) to get it to actually post. Hope that helps!
