G00fySmiley got a reaction from Ben17 in Do GPU braces work?
I use the one that came with my MSI RTX Duke card... but before that I usually just added a wooden dowell painted black cut to the correct length from the shroud to the bottom of the case. painted black to match the interior of the case it does not really look out of place and its not even easy to see through the tinted glass unless you really try. and turn the case lighting all the way up.

I do woodworking too so I just have it laying around, but a 4 ft length .75 inch diameter of poplar dowel is like $3-4 ($3.18 currently at lowe's in my area), though you could use thinner ones for sure .75 just will never let it sag as it is pretty big. black paint if you don't have it another $.79 for a tube of craft paint or if you also airbrush or have rattlecans around it again uses things you may have (heck sharpie would probably work). The most expensive part will be a saw for the dowel if you do not have one but that is only a few bucks too ($5-8) but a hardware store will probably cut it for you if you have the measurement you need.

I'm a chemist by training and have never considered alcohol to be an abrasive agent.

In the absence of isopropyl alcohol, inexpensive plain vodka might be a good choice to clean CPUs.  Most are 45% ethyl alcohol and should not have any problematic compounds that would affect the surface of the CPU or heat sink.

sadly a lot of laptops cheap out on panels you may be able to get a secondary monitor assuming there is a hdmi vga dvi or display port out and run that at 1080p though. There are a lot of great 75-120hz 1080p monitors to choose from that are very reasonably priced. I got my son a nice on sale 75 hz 1080p 24" monitor for ~$100

added bonus to a external monitor for gaming at home would be you can have a bigger screen and maybe some better dedicated gaming input devices for use there btu retain your on the go ability of the laptop if you need it.

I have a nice desktop but take one of my 1440p 144hz monitors with me on trips for this very reason.

not on the laptop. it just doesn't have enough pixels to display 1080p

    put another way
your 1366x768 monitor has 1,046,088 pixels
    a 1920 x 1080 monitor has 2,073,600 pizels

there is no way to force ~2x the pixels into your screen

are there programs that will claim to do so? yes. but i don't know a better way to put this than "you cannot push a button an add 2x the pixels to the area" its a hardware thing based on physical pixels preset. the software solutions really will just downscale the image and decide what to show and what not to show on said pixels and things will still look ~the same except distorted

Because steam is a cancer on the gaming industry and I'm tired of seeing fan boys trip over themselves to praise valve on every occasion possible while sticking their head in the sand regarding everything they do that's terrible.

Problem is they ONLY care about the bottom line and customer be damned if you refuse to participate in valves bullshit and terrible service.

They are 100% a monopoly. What percentage of the PC gaming market do they hold? Far more then every single other client combined. From your list all but #2 apply.

Regarding the rest of your post, I'm not buying the excuses and not sure what part of having to install a DRM client you don't understand is DRM regardless if it's part of a particular game or not.

Press Windows+X, then select "Power Shell (Administrator)" and in the window that pops up, type shutdown /r /fw , press enter and wait about a minute for it to reboot into BIOS automatically. If that doesn't work, try disconnecting all your SSDs and HDDs and seeing if it allows you into BIOS then.

I doubt the 9900Ks with invalidate the 9900k. it seems likely they will take the chips closer to center/ if they do anything at all. seems more like they are just doing the overclocking for you and then recommending proper cooling rather than just tuning for efficiency and lower heat generation. IE for people not wanting to play silicone lottery they can buy this and know they have a good one or can just RMA for a replacement.

as for why userbenchmark is terrible. it basically just does not serve as an example of rela world computing let alone what actual gaming results will be. Recently as intel was overtaken in most independant reviews by AMD in performance. Userbenchmark instead decided it was a good idea to literally change the quite to the few things remaining where Intel was actually beating AMD. for a while there due to their playing around the i3 per themselves was the best CPU money could buy (you see where the issue is in there right?) also as a synthetic benchmark it is not reflective of real world performance of anything beyond thier synthetic load.

i am not quite on team just get a 2070 super.

first question is the rest of the PC this is going into. if you have a quad core i5 a few years old it might not really user the 2070 fully let alone the 2070 super.

It also depends on what you can get a 2070 for. If i could get a 2070 for $420 USD or less I would probably go with that and be happy with the performance per $ if that matters to you. If the 2070 is more than $440ish USD tough... then the 2070 super becomes the clear winner.

It's pathetic review tactics. They know the 9900KS at 5ghz will be a good 10%-ish faster in gaming than the 9900k will, so they are basically giving reviewers such as Linus and the rest to re-review the 9900k by reviewing the 9900KS and declaring it 'a clear winner over zen2' to get good headlines.

I hope that the reviewers will not let Intel get away with this nonsense and refuse to review this thing. Linus didn't want to review the RX 590, so surely it applies to this thing too.

generally speaking 2-3 months for cards to hit MSRP unless it is a monstrous increase in performance. so... for the 5700's abouit 2-3 months. they are great cards and a great value but not some new top end shiny that people with tons of cash are willign to double MSRP for, at that point they would just get a in stock 2080Ti

no, putting the 8th gen in and resetting the bios is not the same as updating the bios of the motherboard. you need to download the latest version of the bios (or an older one if you want just one that says it is compatible with 9xxx chips) and update the bios with that version.

you need version F6 or later to post with your cpu, F13 includes security patches so i would go with that one personmally

yes... and no. Ryzen overclocks due to how the chiplets work there is a few settings to work with but its usually best to let the system handle most of it.

of note to improve performance Ryzen likes the fastest ememory possible so def don't skimp there.

warning there is a B450 will need a bios update to accept the R5 3600 this means usually you need an older amd chip to preform the bios update to accept the new chip.

alternatively you can get a x570 board which will already be able to out of the box take a R5 3600

650 watts is honestly overkill for most builds. rarely do they even need anything over 500 watts. I suggest goign more for liek a gold platnum or titanium 80+ PSU vs more wattage around 500 watts.

as for the CPU. right now unless you are going at the absolute high end (IE a 9900k or kf) then AMD is the winner for gaming. R5 3600 is more efficient and more powerful than Intels i5 offerings. I run an i7 myself because at the time the 8700k was for the price the best option. if i were building today it would be a Ryzen 7 (i actually just built my son a pc and used a Ryzen 7 instead of an i7 for this reason)

I have a 2070... at 1440p it does ray tracing fine... things look great but honestly outside screenshots all I really see ray tracing at right now is a "hey i want to go from 144 fps to 70 fs in battlefield V. I don't notice the ray tracing as much as i notice the performance hit. in screenshots i can tell in the same spots though it looks nicer and maybe its more immersive?... i just am not noticing as I am more looking for targets and such.

I used the ASUS ROG Strix X470-F Gaming for my 2700x (well my son's anyway) honestly it was from a feeling of quality the best board I have handled. everything on it is just... nice, it is beautiful.

from a non aesthetic though did research and decided the ROG board was probably worth the premium price tag. If i were building on a tighter budget it would have been one of the first things cut though.

    G00fySmiley got a reaction from Flying Sausages in R5 3600 or R7 2700?
depends on what you use it for. I just did this debate myself and ended up with a Ryzen 7 2700. My reasoning is with the new generation of consoles around the corner with more cores (its still amd and supposedly both are getting 8 core/16 thread processors so I expect cut down Ryzen 7 modules with vega graphics onboard.) With that in mind  I chose a 2700x over a 3600x to make sure that build (my son's gaming pc) would be reliant for at least the next 5-7 years as engines are modified in newer titles to use the extra cores.
