jones177 got a reaction from Stahlmann in HDR brightness to properly simulate a sun on screen
It barely shows up viewed on a monitor or on the NanoCell TV I am using now but it is easy to spot viewed on an OLED.
It is only noticeable in games that have lots of blue sky like Horizon Zero Dawn.  In movies it usually blends in with the sky.

Using the OLED as a normal monitor was a test that failed. It has not put me off using them for gaming.

jones177 got a reaction from maagz in Devs have forgotten what optimization means, they just dont care.
Some of the games that people call unoptimized usually just poor quality control.
With Bethesda games some meshes could be considered Monday morning or Friday afternoon variety. All the sort of things that should be picked up by quality control. Also some textures and meshes are brilliant alongside others that look like they were done by unsupervised inturnes. This creates a lot of the unevenness in how the games look and play.
In contrast CD Projekt Red's Witcher 3's textures and meshes look like they were made by the same person. That is all down to a disciplined workforce and excellent quality control.

The 3D part of 3D games is all I am qualified to talk about since I did 3D for a living for a very long time. I haven't ripped objects out of games lately because I know what I will find.

jones177 got a reaction from rmgdnz in Is HDR for PC Gaming Broken?
I use the default settings in NVCF.
Desktop Color Depth (Highest 32 Bit Color Depth)
    Output Color Depth (8 bpc)
    Output Color Format (RGB)
    Output Dynamic Range (Full)

In Window I have HDR off and switch it on before I play a HDR game if the game does not do it itself.
I have some Assassin's Creed Games but only really liked Origins in HDR.
My most resent favorite HDR game is Horizon Zero Dawn.

Most games I don't test HDR since if it is a feature I have it on. With CP2007 I only test with it since I still consider the game unplayable.

Most of my favorite games run on a potato.

    1) XCOM UFO Defense. This is a 1994 Dos Box game.

    2) Battle Zone 98 Redux. Hover tanks.

    3) Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. The Original 1994 game.

4)X-Com: Apocalypse. 1997 game that like XCOM UFO Defense uses random tile maps.

5)Battlezone: Combat Commander. More hover tanks.

6)Total Annihilation. Better than the sequels.

    7) Oblivion. Can be modded like Skyrim.

    8)Stronghold HD. Building defenses.

    9)SpellForce. The original.

    10) Fallout 3/NV. Get them before Bethesda makes SE versions.

I have an HDR 10(38" LG) monitor and a LG OLED TV that I play games on and my HDR games only look slightly better on the OLED.
With some games the difference between having it on or off is not worth the effort. So it stays off.

Here is a test I did with CP2077 in the desert.
    HDR off.
    HDR on.
With this game it is a toss up. Some scenes look better but other don't.

I think Origins has a better story and is older so you may get it for a better price.

It is super stable at 5.3ghz but it throttles in some benches.  So unlike my other Intel CPUs it runs out of cooling before it runs out of clocks.

Right now I run it using TVB so it has to stay below 70c. That beats the i7 8086k and i9 9900k with all core 5ghz overclocks in most games.
That also beats 5.1ghz overclock on the CPU in games but not in benches since it can't hit 5.3ghz on one core if it goes over 70c.

It is just a really strange CPU.  So I can't really recommend it but I am glad I have it.

    Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. I have just tested that video you linked on my TV and it looks perfect. I am unsure what this issue could be then. I dont know if it could be a faulty tv but I dont imagine so if some videos work and some dont. Unless the TV is somehow trying to force HDR if thats even possible? Idk if it is but just brainstorming ideas that might make the colours look terrible.

    Thanks for the reply

The best SP game I played last year was Horizon Zero Dawn. On an OLED with powerful hardware it is was perfect.
The SP games I play between AAAs are Space Engineers and BattleTech.

Even though I had to plug in a controller for some parts I did like NieR Automata.

While I am waiting for Mass Effect Legendary Edition I will be doing a 4k playthrough of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat with mods.

I am retired so all I do is goof off.

When I did work it was as a 3D designer specializing in trade shows witch is kind of strange since I had no talent.
I decided to go into it since I noticed that most people that do it also don't have much talent so there would be room for me. I needed to do something because I was a welder/fabricator that had a lung ailment and back injury. I started in 1992 and retired in 2018.

I can't show anything recent because of agreements I made in 2013 with my one customer but in 2012 I did a job for a Tile Trade Show that went under.
The image is of a 10' X 30' inline trades how booth made from a modular display system called Octanorm. Everything in the image as to be accurate since if the booth was sold it would have to be built form plans generated from the 3d model. Even the furniture is from a rental catalog and is to scale.

To make a living I had to do at least 5 projects like this per day and some days were slow and others were crazy.
This was done with Lightwave but in 2013 I switched to 3D Max. The computer was a i7 2600k with a GTX 570.

jones177 got a reaction from metaleggman in GPU problems
GPUs with extreme factory overclocks can have issues with things like Windows updates and driver updates.

To test to see if this is the issue, run the GPU in debug mode. If your problems go away that is the cause.

Also I did a test a while back with SOTTR bench on one of my EVGA 1080 ti SCs with +50 on the cores and +400 on the vram. I did the test again recently and now the game crashes with any GPU overclock. Something is up.

I played the game and in scenes that are side scrolling I had to use a controller to get through.
I was not happy about it since any time I have to plug the controller in I know that it is a bad port.

I did 3D for a living and I would use what I have now if I decided to go back to work. That is an Intel 8 or 10 core with an RTX card.
All my work was ray traced so I would get 3090s for previews.
    This video will show why.

jones177 got a reaction from Anany Munshi in Is Assassin's creed Origins highly cpu dependent?
Yes, but not in the way most people think.

The modern Assassin's Creed games are basically old fashion CPU games that use a single thread to feed the GPU. The strength of that thread determines your frame rate.

They also don't use the most affiant cores on an Intel CPU for this task making the CPU boosts pointless. So the only way to get more performance in the game is with an all core overclock.

Here is what it looks like with an i7 8086k/2080 ti with the i7 at 5ghz all cores. CPU5 is doing the heavy stuff.

The i9 10900k is stock so it loses to the i7. All other games the i9 wins. CPU11 is feeding the GPU on this one but the boosts are on CPU1 and 2 so the i7 with 5ghz all cores wins.

One of my co-workers finally got a hold of their EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 3080 .... three weeks ago?
No issues so far, as far as from what he's been reporting to me.

He's got the latest "updated" version I think.
The red plastic pieces are now black, and couple minor changes.
It reflects the product images EVGA has on their website, and not the retailer photos (e.g. Amazon / NewEgg).

One thing is for certain, this EVGA card is big, it's heavy, and dumps out a lot of heat.

I lurk on the EVGA forums to get info on cards. I find it better than reviews.

The cards with the most issues are the FTW3s 3080 and 3090s.

I originally got in line for the FTW3s since that is what worked out best for my 2080 tis but now I am in line for XC3s.

Monitor the CPU and GPU during a game or other stress test. Easier if you have a 2nd monitor to put them on.

Check the CPU clocks are where you'd expect them to be. I don't know that model well but something in the 4 GHz ball park seems reasonable. What temperature is it running? If clocks are ok, temps shouldn't be a problem. What is the CPU loading like during gaming? We have to be more careful here, not all games will use all threads.

Similar for the GPU. I find GPU-Z to be handy for an at a glance view here. Is the GPU being highly used or not would be the 1st thing I'd check, then the running clocks also.

Personally early gen Ryzen is not my 1st choice for beyond 60fps gaming but I'm not sure it should be this bad, especially on more modern titles like many listed which can scale better with threads than older ones.

Absent further info, some possible guesses might be the GPU is over heating, or the CPU is limiting. On AMD side I'd like at least Zen 2 for a serious gaming system.

I agree with you on that. Low end Asus board sucks. TVB would beat traditional OC in many benchmarks, and is certainly nice to have. But again I hold my point that $600 is way too expensive for a mid range ROG board.
