For almost a year and a half I've been trying to buy an LSI 9211-8i off of eBay and I finally got one yesterday in the mail. All the previous orders failed, either with me getting an automatic refund a few days later along with a message that eBay has banned the seller, or because the order never even left China in the first place (and I then had to manually demand a refund.)

Just gave the card a quick test and it's working great -- 8 SATA-drives connected through a single card sure is nice. The card was pre-flashed by the Chinaman in IT-mode as well, so no need for me to take any extra steps. I'm finally a happy camper. 😀

Finally got around to taking my old server out of its case and putting the i7 6700 in, moving some HDDs around and setting all the software up. Since all of my most important services, like e.g. Nextcloud, a Git-server, OpenHAB2, MariaDB etc. are in LXC-containers, all it took to set them up on the new setup was to copy them over from the old setup and starting the containers -- boy, do I love how easy they make a lot of sysadmin-stuff!

I also consolidated and optimized my storage -- such a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling, when I see a 33TiB pool for all of my videos! 😍

I just attempted to install Arch Linux in a VM and.... I backed out and deleted the VM almost immediately. Having to install and configure every single god damn thing from scratch with no sane defaults or anything...yeah, no thanks. I use Linux to get things done, not to fiddle with config-files for fun, so Arch does not seem like a good fit for me.

The 16GB 2133MHz DDR4 I got with the i7 6700 I bought some weeks ago overclocks rather nicely. The RAM do not have any XMP-profiles, they are just some low-end, dual-rank budget-sticks, but they go all the way to 3066MHz with 1.35V. A nearly 900MHz overclock with stock XMP-voltages? That's not bad, I'm rather pleased for once. I don't think I'll even bother pushing them any further.

Had power cut out for about a minute this morning. No big issue, except the mSATA SSD I used on my Shield TV for installing apps and all their stuff on died. Dead as a rock. With the size of my video-library, it'll take literal hours to rescan it all in Kodi and Plex, once I swap in a new drive... 😒

    Got an i7 6700, 16GB of 2133MHz DDR4 and a shitty mobo from an ASUS prebuilt and some decade-old mPCI-E 433Mbps 802.11n/802.11ac/bluetooth - card for 100€ yesterday.

The WiFi/BT-card works, but it's rather terribly by today's standards, what with such low max. speed even with two antennas connected. The mobo...well, no manual exists for the mobo at all. There was no heatsink on the north-bridge, so I just slapped some aluminium heatsink from my box on it. The BIOS on the mobo is barebones and has apparently received like one or two updates in its entire lifetime. Under Linux, if I have ASPM enabled in the BIOS, syslog gets totally swamped with PCI-E AER-errors, which brings performance down with it as well -- I have to either disable ASPM or disable PCI-E AER.

The CPU isn't that bad, though; a quick test with sysbench indicates that it's about 16% faster than my current server's Xeon E3-1230v3 and consumes less power as well. I went on to undervolt the CPU and CPU-cache by 200mV as well, which brought max. power-draw down quite nicely: running Prime95 small FFTs with defaults caused the CPU to go all the way up to 81C and hit power-limit of 65W, throttling CPU-speed to 3.4GHz, but with the -200mV undervolt, it never hit the power-limit and happily ran at 3.7GHz.

Now I just need a better CPU-cooler, a case and a better mobo for it. Too bad all the suitable mobos cost an arm and a leg here for some reason, and I don't have any cases or LGA115x - compatible coolers lying around.

I bought a Logitech MX Master 2S a couple of weeks back and, well, I am quite disappointed in it.

The weird gesture-button you're supposed to use with your thumb is WAY too stiff to be used comfortably, requiring me to really grip the mouse hard in order to be able to push the button hard enough with my thumb, making it a very akward and jarring thing to do and definitely not a productivity-enhancer. Also, the new scroll-wheel? It's FUCKING GARBAGE. It's really wobbly sideways, the ratcheting is unstable, and what's the most annoying thing about the whole thing is that it often takes several spins of the wheel before it recognizes that I'm spinning the damn thing! A scroll-wheel that doesn't reliably scroll is less than useless -- it actually actively discourages its use!
