  1. I am still a bit confused about HBA and RAID cards and the differences between them. If I had the budget I would def have 2 seperate servers one for nas and one for hypervisor. But I am still a bit concerned about pass through compatibility and how do I check if hardware is compatible for passthrough. I got the Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS are the sata ports on these capable of passthrough or would I need a hba card/raid card. If so could you link me to some cards that would work for this.
  2. If i wanted a raid card how would that work? just curious
  3. Thanks so much, You have no idea how good it feels to be right for once. Been specing out my server for days now and everyone is telling my different ways to do stuff. Just glad i'm on the right track.
  4. I've seen this done with HBA's and Raid cards but can you do this with the sata ports on the motherboard? I am using a ASUS AM4 TUF GAMING X570-Plus with a ryzen 2600 I want to pass in the hardrives to use with freenas and I want to make sure it's possible. https://www.newegg.com/asus-tuf-gaming-x570-plus/p/N82E16813119198?Item=N82E16813119198&nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=AFC-RAN-COM&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-PCPartPicker&AFFID=2558510&AFFNAME=PCPartPicker&ACRID=1&ASID=https%3a%2f%2fpcpartpicker.com%2fproduct%2fwhMTwP%2

  6. If I were to use proxmox as a hypervisor you're saying that I can just plug the drives into the sata ports on the mother board and pass those into freenas? how does raid work. It would be software raid right? I have been told that hardware raid is the way to go.
  7. For the past 3 days I have been going back and forth between building a server, buying a synology/qnap nas and buying a used server. And i have no idea what I should do. Here are my uses for the server in order of importance. 1. Learning sysadmin skills, because of this I don't really want to get a synology or qnap nas because i would like to learn how to setup a hyper-v or setup freenas and stuff like that. Please keep in mind that I love to tinker and please dont recommend a route because it's "too hard" to do it that way for a beginner. 2. Nas, plex and automatic backup solut
  8. I'm not just going to use it for a nas I am planning to have lots of different docker containers and vms and such.
  9. Looking to setup a home nas and was pointed in the direction of getting a used server. Something like https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Poweredge-R720-3-5-2x-E5-2650-2ghz-16-Cores-64gb-H710-8x-Trays-2x750w/373084497508?_trkparms=aid%3D1110001%26algo%3DSPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D225074%26meid%3D1fb0c0aec282454aa3b3109325775b73%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D373079905611%26itm%3D373084497508%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100623.m-1 but I have also been made aware that used servers may not be reliable. What is the reliability of a used server
  10. Thanks, I only need 12-16tb would it be cheaper to get a 1u server with only 4 bays or just get the server you sent and only fill half of them. because filling them with 2tb drives seems too expensive.
  11. Thanks for the link, I am leaning toward a used server but I am a bit concerned about sound. How lound would the one you linked be?
  12. Fairly new to the server world. I know a lot about linux and general computers but within the server industry i'm lost, could you send some links?
  13. I did consider synology, It just seems like the price to performance Isn't there 500 for sub 2 ghz and 4 gb of rams seems absurd. I also love to tinker with stuff and I want a lot of wiggleroom in the future and I don't want to ever have to really upgrade a synology nas because I would just have to buy a new one. The mother is just something I already have lying around and I'm still not 100% if it is compatible with esxi
  14. @Korben Sorry about that https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nhVggJ
  15. This is my pc partpicker. I know it's not server grade stuff but trying to keep it relatively cheap. I am planning on running a raid 5 and using esxi hipervisor and I was wondering if there were any glaring compatibility issues. The reason why I went with that mother board is because it's what I already have so I not sure if that is compatible. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/PurpleManxD/saved/KVP2Vn I am also planning to run all of these different services - Home Assistant Installation - Magicmirror mangement - Plex server to view photos and videos/movies - Nas to store dif
  16. Yes OS works perfectly all cores still boost and everything
  17. I have a Gigabyte z390 aorus Pro mother board and the computer works fine but the BIOS is SUPER laggy, unusable. It's on and off sometimes it's perfectly fine no problems and others it is really slow. the bios boot time is 76 seconds and i have a 15 seconds keyboard input delay within the bios. Just updated to the latest bios (f12d) still no fix Specs 9900k dual gtx 1070 in SLI z390 aorus it's just over 1 year old and it's been like this for a while.
  18. i'm pretty sure they have a caching solution for games but you still should preload games
  19. I am in the progress of making my home a traditional "smart home" seeing what I can make smart. would be cool to see a video about how someone could actually make a smart home beyond just google assistant/alexa integrations. I use Home Assistant which is fantastic and runs on a raspberry pi.
  20. Each BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) ticket includes a 36” wide by 30” deep table space, a foldable chair, a port on our LAN, and two power sockets.
  21. Recently saw the video of linus saying out to package a pc for ltx and tips seem pretty good but what I am really worried about is customs. I have seen horror stories online about them taking apart pc's and trashing them (I am coming from the US so the trip back is more of a bigger deal because US Customs are a pita. Is it worth just bringing my monitor and gaming laptop or is it fairly safe to check my pc under the plane. It also might fit in my carry on. what is the best course of action for the show for the logistics of it and are customs a big deal? Just really confused on what the best th
  22. I'm in san diego so a 22 hour drive does not sound fun but thanks for the advice.
  23. Just bought a BYOC ticket and was looking for advice from seasoned veterans on what is the best way to transport my gaming tower and monitor. I have a mid-atx and a 24" monitor. I will be flying in from cali and don't know the best way to send my tower there first. My backup plan is to bring my gaming laptop and just use that but if someone has done this before let me know the best way. Also I'm concerned about customs. There and back.
  24. Emmet is the hands now best "autocomplete" addon for any web project and I use it pretty much every day. It allows you to stuff like div (tab) and it will type out <div></div> But can also do really complex stuff like (div>dl>(dt+dd)*3)+footer>p and convert to <div> <dl> <dt></dt> <dd></dd> <dt></dt> <dd></dd> <dt></dt> <dd></dd> </dl> </div> <footer> <p></p> </fo
