Ok, so you're comparing games with lux options. Not really a good comparison.

go crack open some pc magazines from the 90's,   What was that big computer mag called, computer shopper or something.  You will see some nice prices.  go check prices in 2001.  I paid around $1000 for a system then.  I would say we have a much larger spread of what is available now and the prices are fair.  Take Ryzen motherboards, do you really need a $300 motherboard?, when a $100 board would do just fine?  do you need to spend stupid money on 4ghz memory or will 3000 do just fine?  GPUs are very inflated right now, but most people probably game at 1080, and even if you do have 4k and want to play that, then 30 to 50fps is still playable for most titles.  Cases are still the same price, unless you need to have something fancy.  We didn't have plexiglass or glass sided cases either, we use to have to take a friggen cutoff saw and customize our cases.  We even used those thin florescent lights instead of led strips they have now.  The biggest driver now is good ol supply and demand, although alot of it is pandemic related, along with an unexpected surge in people wanting to get into PC gaming, and here we are.  I would even say some prices are even artificial right now, but people are buying it up anyway.

Steam says most are still on a 1060, for me it is that and the RX 580 that are the bread and butter skews.

I don’t think a majority of gamers need or want RTX so the 1080, 1070 and 1060 still remain popular.

No one's forcing you to spend that much and no one's forcing you to buy the most expensive stuff available. If you insist on doing that, well, LOOK IN THE FUCKING MIRROR, MATE.
You STILL CAN. Just because there's more stuff to choose from doesn't mean you have to choose the more expensive stuff!

In many ways PC gaming has never been more affordable, even the lower middle bracket of hardware is capable of 1080p 60FPS at reasonable settings.

in addition we now have 10 years or so of decent looking games now, which we didn’t have in 2010. Skyrim can be played on a toaster these days... You don’t need to play 2020+ AAA titles to be a gamer, most of my games are from the 2012-16 period.

It is only the top end, enthusiast sector that is expensive but then again it always has been. These make up a small percentage of PC gamers and even then some are not even gamers, they just like the hardware.

Couple things: one, you can get more than capable gaming machine for under $1000, and two, if you pay $200 for a "gaming keyboard" that's entirely on you.

I mean. AMD fixes driver issues too. In fact, both release driver updates on a regular basis (well, I assume AMD does, haven't had one of their cards in a very, very long time), and they include security fixes, game improvements, etc. Not sure if that was your attempt at click bait but it's a pretty hard fail Nice try though. Better luck next time.

    Hi @Fatty,

I would check the warranty on the drive to see if you can RMA it... money is money!

What you really need is a surge protector and a battery backup. This will protect all of your computer. If you've fried a drive, chances are you will fry something else that is more expensive to replace.

If you using the 1TB as a boot drive, then get an SSD. If it's only for data storage and you already have your OS on a separate SSD, then buy a mechanical drive and save a little coin.

    Good luck!

dizmo reacted to 514_AppleGuy in Will the Tariff's affect canada too?
That's a half-truth at best. Most of TSMC's fabs are in Taiwan (an independent country), and not China. Almost 100% of all GPUs from both AMD and NVIDIA are made in Taiwan, which is *not* included in the China tariffs.

The reason why prices might still increase is because physical assembly of the graphics card itself is done in China. It really has nothing to do with chip fabs.

I think it's the exact opposite. Nvidia gets shit for anything and everything they do, while AMD gets a pass on a lot of crap because "they are the little guy". At least on this forum.
If you don't believe me, look at any thread about supply issues for the 30 series before AMD launched their graphics cards and then look at the threads about the RX 6000 series supply issues.
When the 30 series had issues - LOL Nvidia are so bad. It's a paper launch! It's a conspiracy theory. Nvidia are doing it on purpose!
When the RX series had even worse supply issues - Well it's Corona and it's understandable. Oh we should blame scalpers! Yeah, it's not AMD's fault. It's scalpers!

Because there are around 500 public vulnerabilities discovered and patched every month. Imagine if we had 20 threads EVERY DAY saying "product X has vulnerability Y".
For example The december update for AMD's drivers had 11 known issues in that driver alone, and it fixed 5 issues for previous drivers. Do we really need a thread saying "Latest AMD Driver Update Causes These Issues!" every month just because "AMD fanboys needs to get shown how bad AMD are"? I think that would just contribute to this terrible tribal mentality people has where they feel the need to "prove that company X is bad and company Y is better!".

then in my eyes it looks like the smaller ones would be the only plausible option
and it would be personal preference, which i can't really give assistance with
maybe somewhere on the internet someone has made a post about why 43 inch UW monitors are bugged that i don't know of, but otherwise i'd probably just go with the 43 inch if the specs can handle it

    Yes that would theoretically happen.

However its estimated that it would reach 6 gigs by 2024 and 8 gigs by 2027. Ethereum would most likley have transitioned into Ethereum 2.0 before 2024 though, and as a result no longer be minable.

IMHO, just go EFT. Broad index funds are the way to go. Picking stocks is largely a gamble. I've got my investments in WealthSimple's "Socially Responsible" fund and they've consistently out-performed the regular fund that my brother has his money in (also with WealthSimple).

dizmo got a reaction from Derkoli in Elon Musk is officially the wealthiest person on Earth with a fortune of $185bn
IIRC it was legal in the state he did it in, so it's no different than if he had a drink in his hand. Marijuana is very rapidly becoming less "taboo", and the fact it's so strictly controlled in the US is rather laughable.
A person amassing great wealth can do whatever he or she pleases to do with said wealth. No one else has a right to it. Ideally they'd use it for good, but I see no reason why that has to be enforced by any kind of law, and am vehemently apposed to any suggestion that should happen.
IIRC Elon quite often sleeps at Tesla, instead of going home. A lot more than 90% of the population can say.
Wealth builds wealth. So once you have a decent amount, it easily rolls over when it's invested in stocks or, as Elon has shown, successful capital projects.
You don't have to work hard to make a lot of money. Just smart.
