iFixit released a new, tiny screwdriver kit today. I wouldn't usually bring stuff like this up, but it's just so small and pocketable.

Collegeboard's site has a good enough aesthetic but the site design is, put mildly, "pretty bad". There are redundant pages and it's not immediately certain where exactly to find a specific page (like, where to obtain my SAT scores). I wish Collegeboard and other organizations would prioritize site design over aesthetic. Both are important, but I'd rather have an easy-to-navigate page in Comic Sans than a nice-looking but almost-nonfunctional one.

Even though over the years my interests have shifted from custom Windows PC's to predominantly custom GNU/Linux servers the recent AMD GPU launch covered by Wendell has me legitimately excited for enthusiast desktop hardware again because of how the new feature support allows me to reminisce about what I use to love while applying it to my modern server applications.

As Wendell covers AMD has patched the issue causing the past couple generations of cards to not play well with VFIO in hardware pass-though applications. If the new 6000 series cards work as well as they do on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS in the enabling of running a high performance Windows VM with GPU pass-though then this is something I most definitely am willing to try.

Something else I'm excited to hear is strong Linux support for the new GPU's on day 1. Traditionally getting freshly released hardware working on Linux has always been a mixed bag. The launch of Ryzen 3000 is a great example it required patches to the Linux Kernel to get it working right and this took time causing a delay for adopters but it seems the new AMD GPU's are working well right out of the gate so I'm definitely going to pick up 1 or 2 whenever the frenzy calms down and supply goes up.

Do have to admit though the price hike over last gen is disappointing. Can I afford it? Yes. Do I want to though? No. No I don't. But mhn, that VFIO+early GNU/Linux support 🤤 gimme, gimme, gimme!

Also to note the built-in USB-C port can be forwarded to the virtual machine along with the GPU itself. No need to find a random USB controller on the motherboard or take up a PCI_E slot for USB hardware pass-though. Just connect a USB C dongle to the GPU and you're good to go!

I'm actually currently in a school district tech meeting, which is really nice! They're wondering how to spend $1.5 million on tech in the best way possible. I'm going to advocate for SSD-equipped devices with upgradeable RAM because that's substantially going to extend the lifetime of a device.
