Im sorry have have you seen there new "cheap" IMAC for $1000. Its a damn dual core with intel 5000 graphics and 8gb of DDR3. I could sure as hell build something better for that money.

WD external drives are notorious for having the mini/micro USB ports go bad on them. Might be worth taking apart the enclosure and directly plugging the drive into a desktop and see if you can get all your files that way.

If its worth the $49 to you then go for it. I myself store anything "important" on my RAID10 server so I have no need for my desktop to be redundant.

Altecice got a reaction from Zando Bob in CPU CLEANING! :D (on a laptop...)
Now that you have taken the heatsink off the CPU you have no choice. You need to clean off and replace the thermal compound. What you're describing is perfectly normal and correct on a laptop CPU as they are missing the IHS that desktop CPU's have to allow them to distribute the heat more efficiently, so need the extra thermal compound to act as the TIM or buffer for the gap between the CPU and the heatsink.

Altecice got a reaction from GoodBytes in Why isn't the creators update for W10 showing up in Windows update?
The update is a gradual release update. Meaning they slowly push the update out in batches to stop some unforeseen bug from wiping out the whole Windows user base.

You want the OOBE (Out Of Box Experience). This is what big OEM's like DELL,HP will do for home use computers.

Thank you Altecice. Thank you very much.

You might have saved me a lot of pain. One of those things, when you know what it's specifically called it's a lot easier to search for.

    Many many thanks!

It sounds is if you are wanting to do many things with this server. You will want to start looking into Virtualisation, I would suggest ESXi for your Host OS... bit of a learning curve but isint that the point?  From there you can look into a simple Windows (or Linux) OS for your file shares for the NAS element and have a VPN VM set up for accessing it from the Internet. Expect to spend days/weeks on getting things working but thats how you learn.

Get yourself a cheap switch (managed) little Netgear 4 port will be fine and connect your server and your PC to it and then the cable from the wall, will work fine.

Well thats the main part, BECAUSE IT IS FUN! . Just be sure to spec enough RAM if you do decide to go down the VM route. Also make sure (again if you decide to use ESXi) that all the parts you are using are compatible (stick to INTEL NIC's). Avoid prebuilds like Dell C510/610's they are LOUD and expensive to run. Get your feet wet first then move onto greater a bigger things!

If you do get majorly stuck just send me a PM, I will get back to you at some point.

I would recommend against backing files up to your private home server. Home networks aren't designed with enterprise security in mind, and you wouldn't want to risk customers data. Instead, look into cloud services like crashplan.

Through a bit of searching I have found this forum thread: http://forum.mibuso.com/discussion/63463/best-hardware-specifications-for-nav-server

"  Microsoft has run benchmarks (NAV 2013 R2) with 500 users on a 4 core server with less memory. They are recommending around 125 users per core. I tend to be a bit more conservative and spec around 50 - 75 users per core. "

I would assume for £4 the sensor you are going to be getting in that mouse will be the cheapest of the cheap. It looks like its LED and perhaps it is very limited as to what it will work on.
