Only if you know what's going on... and if the mugger comes up behind you and stabs you, you don't. Regardless of whether you can hear them. There isn't a "stabber" sound.

Compiler optimizations aside this is a situation where I'd rather have code clarity than ever so slightly higher speed.

It's just one operation in a for loop, I doubt there's anything to optimize...

There are millions if not billions of people who worked much harder and have nothing to show for it today. Let's not pretend any billionaire got where they are through anything but pure luck.

Even just looking at Musk's own life, do you think this year he worked 10 times more than he did during the entire rest of his life? Or did he just win at the stock lottery?

There are people whose achievements have been fundamental to our every day lives whose names nobody even remembers. Musk is just a businessman who invented nothing and busted unions for personal profit.
Why does it make "little sense"? What use can a single man have for 190 billion?

His parents owned a mine. That’s hardly nothing. He bought into most of the companies he runs. He hasn’t really created anything. He’s kinda like Steve Jobs only more privileged since he had money going into life.

Insane how he multiplied his already obscene wealth by a factor of 10 in a year by doing absolutely nothing.

Sauron reacted to Spotty in UK watchdog to investigate Nvidia's ARM acquisition
    Summary
UK Competition and Market Authority’s (CMA) has announced it plans to launch a formal investigation in to Nvidia's proposed acquisition of ARM.

    My thoughts
I don't think this investigation is going to be a surprise to anyone. Right now they're just open for comment from companies that may be affected by this deal with the full formal investigation taking place sometime after, with a date not yet set.
Nvidia buying ARM is going to be a huge deal ($40B) for the industry and there's definitely a lot of parties involved with ARM that such a deal could affect, such as Apple who now rely on ARM based processors in their new devices.

Potentially the deal could be blocked from going ahead.

I think it's too early to call whether or not it would be blocked. If it is blocked who would ARM sell to?

Haha, oh boy. I've been wearing headphones for 20 years in public. Result? Absolutely nothing. There's been maybe two times when I've almost been hit by a car, and it wasn't any fault of the headphones. It was driver negligence. If most folks are having nothing happen to them, do you know what that means? It's not that dangerous, and the people that are having things happen are the exception, not the rule.
Not true. Hearing, yes, but hearing isn't every sense we have. You will still know what people are doing to you. You still have touch, sight, and in some cases, smell. So they weren't looking where they were going. Deaf people exist, and they're not getting plastered all over the place. This has also happened to people not wearing headphones. I'd say at a greater rate than those that are. That's a really irrelevant point. By your theory, you should never:
Eat food - you might choke on it. This will not happen if the food does not enter the mouth. Take any kind of transport - accidents happen every day, in every city. Drink water - it's possible to OD. If you take due care, you'll be perfectly fine.

What a sad life that would be to live.
He meant the intent is still there regardless of if you're wearing headphones or not. If they're coming up from behind, they wouldn't know you were wearing them anyway. Plus, that's such a rare occurrence. It's easier to threaten someone with a knife, than to go through with the actual act.
He's spent too much time playing CoD and needs to hear them loud footsteps or have the perk so that you know when people are looking at you

Sauron got a reaction from Meganter in PSA: Ear Buds and the lack of Awareness in Public.
It happens every day but it does not happen to everyone and everywhere. The likelihood of me getting mugged is statistically insignificant, let alone get stabbed out of nowhere for a handful of cash that I'd just give them if they threatened me. There are some categories who are more statistically at risk but I don't fall into any of them.

And again, what could I even realistically do to prevent it even if I assumed everyone was out to stab me? Even if I carried a weapon with me I couldn't just pull it on random strangers all the time... and by the time the knife is out it's usually too late.
That way I can headbutt them and escape

I'm curious, how can I prevent people from coming up behind be and stabbing me if I'm not wearing earbuds? Even if I can hear them I won't automatically assume they want to stab me...  and even if I did I'm not sure I could stop them, what with them having a knife...

This should be more about "pay attention to your surroundings" than earbuds in particular imo. They don't block out traffic noise in my experience unless you're playing music at a volume so high that it would be unsafe for your hearing to begin with.

That depends entirely on what the algorithm is. The entire field of cryptography is dedicated to finding algorithms that make it nigh on impossible to find the input starting from the output without trying every possible combination - if any of those are used then no, you can't do it. If it's something very simple (e.g. "take the password and return the sum of its bits times 3") then it's possible you could figure it out with a few sample inputs. If it's anything security related it should be the former though.
