SpaceGhostC2C reacted to beerdrunkmonk in Mining Farm with 78 GeForce RTX 3080s Spotted: Capable of Generating $128,088 Per Year
I don't want it to die, but I would like for it to change. For instance PoW (proof of work, which requires mining) needs to die off. There are other ways besides PoW, though, that don't require tremendous amounts of electricity.

I'm also not a fan of cryptocurrency technology used for speculation, which is the bulk of its use currently. But corporations creating their own for uses such as assurance contracts is viable and beneficial.

That said, I admit I mined some several years ago, but I've since sold off all my crypto and moved on. These days I'd rather put my compute resources towards something more beneficial, such as folding@home.

Id just sync the data over the internet, and get 2 drives.

Id probably just keep the laptop for now, seems a lot less hassle.

RTX is a niche feature, which do make games look better, but only a handful of games support it and it isn't going to be all games for a while. Non raytracing rendering still looks good, and most games only use that. Raytracing isn't a must have, but nice to use if you want to. AMD currently has slightly lower prices for traditional performance, while Nvidia has better raytracing, video encoding, driver stability, and productivity support.

    In short No
but if you want to make use of DLSS then maybe, personally whilst RT is better it is far from being usable yet so I would not base a purchase on that in any way.

    This is literally fake news.

Oh, and the photo in the article of the shipping container with Nvidia branded boxes is fake. If you reverse image search the image you can find the original without the Nvidia branding. This image is showing on websites from over a year ago.

Without any packaging just the card itself, an Nvidia Founders Edition RTX3080 has dimensions of 285mm x 112mm x 40mm. 1.2768L or 0.0012768m3
A 40' shipping container has inside volume of 67m3 (67,000L)
Absolute best case scenario, no packaging whatsoever, no air gap between the cards, the cards fitting perfectly within the container... You realistically could not fit more than 50,000 cards in a 40' shipping container.

But you don't even need to know the volume/dimension to know that 500,000 graphics cards in a single shipping container isn't right. Just go by the weight of a card. I'm not sure how much an RTX3080 weighs. 1.5kg? 2kg? Let's pretend the card went on a diet and it only weighed 1kg. 500,000 cards would weigh 500 metric tonnes. Never going to hold that much weight in a shipping container. The crane at the docks would never even get it on to the ship. 40ft standard shipping container has a max payload of around 25,000kg.

My GTX1080ti retail packaging box has dimensions of 40cm x 24cm x 9cm, for a volume of 8.65L (0.00865m3). You could fit around 7,500 of those boxes in a standard 40' shipping container, which assuming around 2kg per box would put it around total payload weight of 15T, within the 25T payload limit for the container. Seems like a realistic figure.

Realistically there would be less than 10,000 graphics cards in a single 40' shipping container.
Also if it was 500,000 cards that went missing that would be 350 million dollars worth at MSRP. I'm sure Nvidia would go looking for that

You can only plug in the fan one way, because of the plastic guards on the fan header + fan connector.

Bought a prebuilt that doesn't have one, but I have an external one that  I use frequently. I've completely stopped using Amazon Prime/Netflix/etc and have gone back to buying DVDs of stuff I like. No memberships, no subscriptions, no internet connection required. I'm sick of having to pay for the privilege of being told how I am allowed to watch things I already paid for.

The Older Generations are the ones who came with Computing  and Microcomputers/Personal Computers in the first place. The 70's is when the latter when such Devices came into common use. Althrough Devices that could as such already exist during say sometime in the 60's. No one called that and they were quite pricey.

For example Bit Slices could be used to build what can used in a Microcomputer as everything would you willneed in single box.
