I made a nifty little discovery about the VPN server/client software Pritunl which was featured in the LTT DIY VPN video back in early January:
As it turns out with a little research the software is designed to work in more than one way. It can be used as the video described for re-routing your network traffic acting as a web-hosted encrypted proxy (a VPN) but as it turns out if you host the VPN server at home you can have it re-route your traffic to your home LAN enabling encrypted access to your private network via the Internet.
This worked out quite well on my phone with the OpenVPN Connect client. At work I was able to reach all of my servers private IP's without having to port forward any of them. I also had access to SMB services from my file servers.
This was definitely a worthwhile venture. I will follow-up with a full tutorial in the coming weeks.
