I forgot to answer your basic question.  I have all the spare parts mentioned in my post, but to answer your question I would say no, it's not worth it.  Basically if you have to spend any money on the upgrade, regardless of whatever it is you're replacing, then it is not worth it.  So, no money involved, maybe.  If there is money, forget it.

No, it's not worth the current prices of an SSD. DDR2 systems aren't old like you seem to think they are though. I still use systems with DDR ram all the time.

It's gonna depend on your compiler. Can it use the 24 threads to compile code? If yes - threadripper's the choice. Otherwise grab a 8700K. I'm sure you'll get parts lists very soon
I'd say you probably can just squeeze out the Threadripper 1920X, but damn GPU prices are stupid high right now (ethereum price is stupid high as well so makes sense).

I doubt you'll need that much processing power (I could be 100% wrong) So an 8700k + 1080ti 16gb of 3200+ ram should fit well. But keep in mind I could be wrong and something like a Threadripper would be much better/

Just woke up from a super intense dream, but as it ended there was a squarespace sponsor slot for some convention that doesn't exist given by Linus.

Both Seagate Barracuda and WD Black drives (in the 2TB variants) are both 7200RPM with 64MB cache. Not sure on higher capacities, but I think Barracuda drives generally retain their RPM.

I looked at the ATH-M40X and ModMic and almost went with it, but it went over budget a bit much, and didn't want to go used, so I went with the Cloud II's from HyperX because they have great performance and are built well for the price.

Woodman567 reacted to joshuaneigh in Would anyone reccommend this Dell laptop from Best Buy?
Most laptops come backlit these days, and dragging around that heavy thing with little to no battery life would suck. Save your money and get something you wouldn't mind lugging around between home and school.
