4GB of RAM today is a very minimal amount. 8GB is about as low as anyone should have especially if trying to game.

LIGISTX got a reaction from Cool_Evlo in Does using a custom fan curve damage the fans ?
    No, it’ll be fine.

Better question is, why do that? PC parts don’t mind running a bit warm, and maxing fans out just makes then loud… you can just let the GPU manage it’s fan on auto, it’ll be fine 🙂

What CPU and what RAM speed and timing (the C/CAS on the box)? Those 2 are way more important in this diagnose than a PSU.

LIGISTX got a reaction from BondiBlue in I am thinking to build a 10TB NAS - Need help!
Exactly as others said, not required, but I chose to use it… I spent close to 2 grand on all the hardware including 10x4 TB drives, what’s an extra ~100 bucks in RAM to get ECC.

Also, if you want to run VM’s, I would look at virtualizing freenas as running things under freenas is not ideal. I use ESXi and run a few Ubuntu server VM’s alongside Freenas, and a windows VM as well. I used to try and run things under freenas, but that was just a headache.

LIGISTX got a reaction from SpiderMan in BSOD RAM?
A CPU undervolt can cause ram issues, yes. The IMC (integrated memory controller) is inside the CPU… having more slots populated puts more stress on the IMC. I would reset all CPU options to auto and test again.

If you can repeatedly show it to only be one bad RAM stick by taking others out, moving it from slot to slot, and if the issues only happen with that stick, yes that stick is certainly the issue. I would set all CPU voltages to auto tho, with your CPU temps there is no reason to underclock, it’s just adding one more unknown for no real world gain. 75c is pretty cool.

@Luvs2Splooge A RAID card flashed to IT mode working as an HBA is the best option. I forget which one I have, it’ll be in my dig under my homelab parts.

Id get a lsi hba, something like a dell h200 or h310, or lsi 9201-8i. They should be sub 50 bucks on ebay.

Perfect. That's exactly what i needed.  I have the drive plugged into the motherboard, but didn't realize the power goes directly into the drive. I don't know how I missed that, but you definitely just saved me a bunch of time. Much appreciated!

Looks like your NVME is dumping your PCI-e lanes to 8x. This could contribute to your problem.

Never use a VPN while gaming if your trying to reduce lag. Your inducing a lot of hops you don't need.

The first place your data goes is always your ISP servers, thats your gateway out to the internet. No matter what software your using, the hardware is what dictates where its going. Data flows from your PC, to your switch/router -> modem -> ISP hardware -> more ISP hardware -> probs more ISP hardware -> out to the interwebz. If you use a VPN, there is an extra hop at the end that is to your VPN -> interwebz.

You really need more then a 250 watt PSU.... The Q6600 alone would want a 150 watt.

If you can get a larger power supply, you can look into things like a GTX 980, or maybe even a GTX 275, that would be about the fastest thing I would look for for a q6600, any more and it won't really be a benefit. Maybe a GTX 460 or 560? I just sold a 560 HD for 40 bucks 2 months ago on craigslist.

Unraid will let you actually add storage in this way, ZFS will not.... Unraid definitely sounds like the option for you.

Also, the first 3 rules of RAID is RAID is not a backup, and the first 3 rules of transcoding 4k is don't transcode 4k, keep a 1080 or 720p copy as well as a 4k copy. Just things to remember 😉

    Yea unraid should work fine.

The 1700x should do 4k, but depends on the codecs, but Id really try not to transcode 4k if you don't have to.

The only thing is unraid isn't that fast, don't expect speeds faster than a single hdd for reads, and slower for writes without a write cache.

Lol, nice and same!  My i7 920 was my first high-end machine, my first non-hand-me-down machine, and was also my first machine I ever spec'd and built myself.
And I got all the parts from NCIX!  😄  .

But its been a hot minute since I've looked into new PC parts.

I still have my 920 and P6T deluxe V2! Lol. Such a monster for the time. I think I ended up with a gtx 275 in mine before I retired that system. Or, hmm, maybe a gtx 470, that sounds more right.

If you can get like a gtx 970 for a good price, that would be a pretty solid option.

If you can, OC the CPU as much as possible. I ran mine 3.86 ghz 24/7 for years. 21 multiplier (you can lock it at the turbo multiplier which is 21), and decent cooling and you’d be pretty solid!

Nope, still works perfectly. I boot it up every now and then.

It was retired for a 4770k many years ago. I kept the 920 system due to sentimental value; it was my first truly high end machine.
