I took a few semesters of CS when I was in collage about 8 years ago. We only use C++.

Absolutely! The full-size New Model M uses their new moulds, and it's a good indication of what's coming; less blemishes and more rigidity!

Indeed, they're currently still accepting preorders for them - $105 in total (excluding shipping): $25 for securing one, $80 due on shipping.

They were supposed to be launched in March 2020, but they had some teething issues with their controllers (a new design compared to the fairly universal ones they use on their other keyboards) and thus delayed to May. Then COVID happened, and they had to shift focus to fulfilling regular orders with limited staff numbers to survive. They're coming eventually, they just need to get their code right. At least, that's what they told me when I inquired mid November.

    What they told me mid-November:
Their latest update from FB from late December (reddit post so you can avoid FB 😉 )

Just came in today - the Unicomp/General Electric Medical Model M (aka, the MMM) buckling springs keyboard. Dated 2013, it came in quite the disgusting shape but I have no doubt it will clean up nicely (although, I've given it a surface clean already)! The keycaps are very colourful for a Model M, featuring the obvious yellow on the numpad era, the red emergency save button, and an array of up to triple dye-sub legends!

The connection is fairly standard - PS/2. It outputs just like any other PC keyboard, so the macros must have been software-side or there's a trigger/Fn combination I'm missing.

For privacy, I use NetSurf and/or w3m. The only problem is that their JavaScript support is not quite good, so if you absolutely require JavaScript, you might lose here.
Still, disabling JavaScript protects your privacy better than anything else could in the web.

I'd recommend learning Python.  Has some amazing numerical libraries these days, and since it's a general purpose language, you have a lot more flexibility in terms of what you can do.

And it being free never hurts either.

Try Gentoo. You'll have to learn a lot to make it even run. (And it is rather good.)

You should have asked me. I, personally, find Linux too incoherent (of course, as the kernel, the userland and the desktop come from different teams, unlike Solaris and the BSDs where everything is a part of the base system), it is relatively unreliable (compared to OpenBSD) and the community can be weird. But it cannot be wrong to try as many systems as you can find. Just make sure that you don't focus too much on a very narrow selection...

    No.

"w3m is a pager and/or text-based browser. It can handle table, cookies,
authentication, and almost everything except JavaScript."

Luxury. When I was a lad we used ta dream of having a table to eat our cookies on, it wasn't much of a life, but it was authentic and our parents told us we had almost everything we needed ta be happy.

Except Javascript, we never had that because no one needed that.

I find different Linux systems very foreign to each other. There are different firewalls (iptables, ufw on Debian, firewalld on CentOS for example). There are tons of different ways of managing network connections (NetworkManager, netplan, etc). There are different init systems (systemd, openrc, runit), which means different ways of starting services. There are different package managers (yum, apt, pacman, dnf, snap, and tons of others).

There are different graphical environments and window managers too. Most people think of these as differences but they don't matter; you can install any of them anywhere. It's much harder to change the package manager or init system.

100% agree. The BSDs are so much nicer. I'm so fed up with Linux reinventing how I'm supposed to connect to the network every week and having 19 ways of installing packages on the same system.

cout<<str; Yeah, no. Won't work in C (and - technically - not even in C++ unless you pollute your namespace).
