I don’t really like Windows myself even on a fast machine. I use it because I have to, not because I want to.

The crazy bit is Windows behaves itself on my RCA tablet with the Atom and 2 GB of ram (the above laptop has 8 GB). Though it might be that even eMMC seems to be more responsible than the HDD in the laptop above.

On, just out of the blue, whatever is hammering the disk just stopped. That is super bizarre. No indexing was going on, and I killed wuauserv (Windows Update), so neither would’ve done it.

It is bad. Waiting for the SMART info to load. And all I wanted to do was play some Stardew Valley with a friend.

Theres 70% free space. The main problem processes that seem to be choking the drive actually seem to be from Windows itself. Anti malware service, windows update, System, etc. This is Windows 8 btw, if that matters.

Well, SMART data shows up flawless. Guess unless my friend wants to spend the money on an SSD upgrade, not much I can do.

Pretty broad terminology there. I hear MineSweeper and Solitaire can run quite well on a 386 without a video card at all. 😛

IT admins at work here seem to have the AV configured to be quite aggressive, as even our (few) SSD based systems can slow down a lot. (Note: not the people using Mcafee, the Mcafee system was an individual).

Nothing really sketchy on my end here, and in fact, sketchy stuff is kind of what this Atom windows tablet is for. I'm still really irritated when someone messes with my stuff though. The computer is my servant, and it had damn well better remain that way.

As for what was downloaded that led up to this incident, they were Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, and a plugin to strip the drm of .EPUB files so I can read my books from the Play Store freely on other devices. The plugin itself isn't an executable, so something must've piggybacked on either Adobe Digital Editions, or Calibre (or just flat out exploited something on a webpage). MalwareBytes seems to have detected something as a PUP.Optional.Conduit.

Looks like running AdwCleaner and MalwareBytes killed the adware. HitMan Pro detected nothing of note afterward, besides a bunch of cookies.

Very oddly, that Malware/Adware had switched off the metered data setting as well, which I had verified was On earlier this day as Windows informed me of an Update that was stopped due to being on a metered connection.

I was doing some servicing on a new Core i3 HP laptop...It came with both AV, and Norton.....I removed both of them and the system improved in speed dramatically.

I only use Windows Defender tbh. On macOS Malwarebytes as a preventative measure after I do sketchy things on the internet

I've been using Malwarebytes Antimalware with Windows Defender (built-in) for years now, with no incident. Better combination than any commercial product I've had my hands on thus far

Ever since Westmere (1st gen core ix), mobile i5 CPUs have had hyperthreading. How did it take you 8 years to realise i5s had hyperthreading?
