Still have a mountain of stuff to learn but after two weeks i can do most of the basic stuff and have started to pull the strings on a project Still a lot of dead time i dont know what to do with but it feels a lot better than it did just last week

might be getting an EK PE360 rad, im exited for when the ncore V1 arrives because thats probably the only point i will feel like i can spend some money on fans because i will be redoing the entire loop then.

Clean everything, new tubing, new coolant, potentially a new rad and new fans. Hopefully i will be able to DIY sleeve the cables too

So here's the current situation. SSDs are still kind of expensive for how much data I ever growingly need to store. Most of the data is being archived and doesn't need quick access so I've made the decision in order to give myself more time to buy SSDs I'm offloading most of my large archived data to spinning platters. I still want the data to exist locally to the server since I plan to store backups on the network. However if you guys remember the SSD server (top):

I didn't leave any room for 3.5" storage and there sure isn't any room inside around the motherboard.

So, there's only one thing left to do.

I'mma build a DAS  the three LSI 9201-16i's in the server, I have 2 free ports so lets make use of those:

Center LSI card you can see the SFF-8087 cables running back to what is a dual SFF-8087 to SFF-8088 card.

You have people with USB3.X external storage, you have people with USB C, you even have thunderbolt. Peh, step up your Direct Attached Storage with Mini-SAS SFF-8088 :

Rated for 3GB/s but I'm convinced it can do 6GB/s.

This is a HP 468405-002 PCI_e SAS Expander. This takes one SASx4 cable (that'd be four drives at full SATAIII speed) and breaks it into 32 independent SAS connections. It has the drawback of drastically reduced per drive performance but the benefit of supporting many more disks.

Unfortunately the chip under that heatsink gets pretty hot so it needs addressing.

This was one of the first reasons I wanted a 3D printer. So I can make stuff like this:

And it works pretty damn well:

    Keeps that chip plenty cool.

As for the DAS itself it is the iStarUSA MAGE212U40-PCI-E-RF which I got on Scratch & Dent sale. The Zippy PSU fan was smashed in so I replaced the fan and so far it's behaving itself. All this is is a box that holds HDDs and powers them.

If you lookup this enclosure you'll see I'm not using it the way it was designed. The slot the HP SAS card plugs into passes though to the half-height to the left. This connects to a special card that is basically a external x8 PCI_e cable (if anybody's interested in those bits I'll post pics) so this box is designed to be used as a HBA or RAID controller on an extension cord basically. It's a JBOD box but the HP SAS expander does not use the PCI_e slot for data transfers everything goes between the SFF-8088 port and the internal SFF-8087 ports so I'm just using that board as a source of power.

This 2U is just a means to start the archiving of large footage I have. That single SAS expander though off one SFF-8087 port in my server by itself will hold up to 32 disks. And I have two. This means I can have a single server with enough bays to hold 40 SSD's and 64 HDD's.

At the moment I've tested this box on the SSD server and it's incredibly easy, plug'n'play. I took 5 old WD Red 3TB drives and set them up in a RAID10 pool. I'm seeing speeds around 275MB/s reads & writes with about 7TB of usable storage.

And there we have it installed:

    View from the back ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°):

Very basic just power & the SFF-8088 cable. Currently moving about ~3TB of video over to it. Seeing sustained speeds around 200MB/s. I was seeing speeds as high as 500MB/s but I discovered it was using the servers 256GB of RAM as a write cache. Once it stopped it settled around 200MB/s but that fine. It's plenty fast for archival storage.

Next up, expanding the storage in the backup server (VM server - bottom of the stack) ordered another 10TB drive. Even though RAID0 isn't recommended I can't afford parity right now ?. I could also use the speed boost. The single backup disk is currently sitting at 72% utilization so I'm going to cut that in 1/2 when the new drive arrives and ~double the read/write performance. I'm not as worried about pool redundancy when the pool itself IS the redundancy. Make sense? I just need to make sure I'm aware the pool is online 100% of the time with no errors. Sounds easy enough right? ?

paddy-stone reacted to Windows7ge for a status update, In very early preparation for converting my server from Windows Server 2016 to FreeNA
In very early preparation for converting my server from Windows Server 2016 to FreeNAS my primary concern was weather or not I could run BOINC on it.
Reason being my servers are ludicrously overpowered for my application so I want to put their resources towards something useful. Speaking of I got my first shiny badge  thanks @Spotty.

FreeNAS is based off of FreeBSD and henceforth so are the jails. Despite my best efforts I could not get BOINC working. Every guide I cam across was either out of date or just didn't work and trying to enable remote management was just a complete failure. So instead of forcing myself to figure out FreeBSD I tried installing Debian. This again was something that FreeNAS had actually abandoned support on. Apparently it use to be a thing but it stopped. I get to the point where it's installed but I cannot access the console. It simply doesn't work. If I try to remote in:
ssh root@ip-address It replies, (wants a private key) so it's active but I just can't access the console though FreeNAS to enable a user so I can SSH in. So Debian's dead.

So now this leaves me with one other option. Forget FreeNAS and install a server distro of Debian. Pretty much every function of FreeNAS that I want is either pre-included or can be installed so I wouldn't be losing much. If anything I'd have something to gain. I would like for the server to have virtualization functionality but Bhyve on FreeNAS is terrible for high performance compute applications. It has too much overhead. QEMU is amazing and can be paired with virt-manager to create as many near native performance VM's as I'd like. Pretty cool.

The thing I wanted most in FreeNAS was ZFS and that can be installed easily on Debian. The only thing that's going to suck is I won't have the easy WebUI when making the pool.

Do you have any idea what the ONE LINE command would be to create a ZFS RAID60 with 40 drives?
The next thing I would desire is replication which can be achieved with RSYNC over SSH so I have that covered.
Creating snapshots isn't hard (though I don't really need them).
Datasets are also easy to create.

So really there's no reason that I'm locked down to using FreeNAS. I can install anything else and install the features that are included with FreeNAS and end up with a better hypervisor, ability to expand, & even install a GUI. So that's where we're at right now. I've got parts on order for building a DAS since I built my server to hold nothing but 2.5" SSD's there's no room for 3.5" HDDs. Hopefully hooking that up will be plug'n'play. Fingers crossed.
