snortingfrogs reacted to Techstorm970 in Google sued by the Department of Justice over Antitrust laws
I really hope this works.  And that they do it to other companies, too.  Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft (again), I like Apple but them too, etc.

YouTube is a tough one.  They have a near-monopoly of user-created video media, but breaking them up may have more negatives than positives.  Hard to say.  Prying them from Google would at least get them out of Google's toxic work culture, though, and force them to do their own thing.

snortingfrogs reacted to LAwLz in Nvidia looking at acquiring Arm
I think that has more to do with the general attitude people in the PC community has against Nvidia, you not talking to the right people, and possibly some confirmation bias, rather than Nvidia's actual reputation.

Talk to an OpenGL developer and they will probably have a lot of terrible things to say about pretty much all GPU makers except Nvidia. They are (or at least used to) be the only ones that actually implemented OpenGL in a bug-free and well documented way. Talk to game developers and they will probably also praise Nvidia for their immense help they provide when making and optimizing games. Talk to gamers and they will most likely say that Nvidia is way ahead of the competition when it comes to GPUs. Talk to AI and data science people and they will probably tell you great things about Nvidia's "Inception program", which support startup companies in the field. Talk to other people and they will tell you about a lot of the innovations that has come from Nvidia. Talk to Nvidia Shield TV owners and they will tell you that Nvidia's support for the platform has been top-notch, basically Apple-tier support. On top of great performance (even to this day, despite being 5 years old now).

Nvidia makes lots and lots of good things. It's just that the general sentiment about them are that AMD is an angel and therefore their competition has to be the devil. For crying out loud people still bring up the time Linus Torvalds gave them the finger. That was 8 years ago and the thing he complained about has since long been fixed. But let's keep bringing it up because "Nvidia bad lol".

snortingfrogs reacted to 19_blackie_73 in [Update] MSI paying reviewers to remove their bad reviews of their products
I am personally not a fan of blacklisting complete companies. I once hat a shit laptop from dell in the 2010s, but that doesnt mean I'm not more than happy with my 2 dell monitors. Look at the products you are looking to buy, not what they had 10 or 20 years ago that was shitty. Also don't buy products blind from one company because you had one good product, evaluate each on their own.
Support can change over years too, its not set in stone only because the support was shit in 1999 it still is today or the other way round.
I personally wouldn't know what I would want any different than my msi board and gpu, both run very good and fulfill my needs.

While these drives are not for the average nerd (or even porn-hoarders) it's very interesting to see what can be achieved.

snortingfrogs reacted to RejZoR in Twitch streamers threatened with channel bans over copyrighted music
Music industry is straight up cancer and they wonder why no one wants to buy music. THIS IS ONE OF DAMN THINGS! It's not because people listen to it for free on streams because it plays in the background, it's because music industry is full of assholes.

If some streamer just straight up plays music and does nothing else, sure, whatever. But if someone has it in the background, just stop it. Stop being greedy assholes.

snortingfrogs reacted to LAwLz in Who archives the archivers? - The Internet Archive sued (for potentially $210 billion) by publishers due to questionable COVID decisions
This is exactly what I would expect from greedy publishers. They didn't even ask IA to stop from what I can tell.
Their first response to someone trying to do a good deed is "let's sue them for billions of dollars!".

It's pretty clear thst publishers in general are the scum of the earth. Hell, like the article says some of them didn't even like that IA were lending books they had legally bought.

What IA did is illegal, but the reaction from publishers is clearly a horrible one as well. Fuck em. I hope IA gets out of this unharmed. They provide extremely valued services (way back machine among other things) and in general want to do good things for us (the general public).

snortingfrogs reacted to Master Disaster in OFCOM to Regulate Social Media in the UK
Until a few years ago I actually worked with Children myself. In my case it was primary age so social media wasn't a really big problem but most people would be surprised by how often it did become an issue for kids who aren't legally old enough to even have accounts.

I have to disagree. Part of the reason our manager decided to shut down (it was an out of school club) was because she realised that a lot of the kids were beyond help exactly because of their parents. We had a 5 year old boy who would grab everyone and anyone by the genitals (staff, teachers, other kids, parents, male or female), mum tried so hard to stop him and then it came out that his dad was teaching him to do it. I watched a parent come into school to collect her son, so drunk that she couldn't even stand, punch the deputy head in the face because she refused to allow her to take her child. We had a mum come into school to collect an 8 year old boy holding a copy of GTA V in her hand. One girl used to come and eat toast with us every morning (despite not even being a member of the club) because her dad would give her a can of squirty cream for breakfast every day. We had an 11 year old boy who was arrested for dealing cannabis to high school children after school for his older brother and dad. There's one more I'd love to share but if I did I would probably get banned.

Unfortunately it is the parents fault and as a care provider you have to understand, you can never make a difference as long as they're going home to no rules or boundries..

snortingfrogs reacted to ONOTech in EA is banning Linux Gamers in Battlefield 5
Now, someone correct me if I'm wrong here (it's been a minute since I used Wine or anything), but is it actually hacking?

From what I know you use Wine (virtualization) + DXVK (translates DX11 to Vulkan support) + a few native lines to get it to work. None of that data is "unauthorized" since it's all installed on your computer and you can access it.

You're also not distributing the edited files anywhere and it doesn't improve gameplay - no macros or anything. I think the term hacking is thrown around too much (I'm guilty of this myself)

It looks like a good set of monitors, but I think the jump from 32" to 55" is a bit much, I wanted to see a model in between at around 40-43".
I think the 32" model can be big seller if reviews are good.
