ltguy got a reaction from mineblaster in Pfsense build
After building a pfsense router for someone else, I decided I wanted one at home to dabble with. Like everything I build its pretty overkill. Might run some vm's on it in the future. Clearly i had to buy a rack to put it in. Those pictures will come later.

    Parts List
    CPU: AMD FX-8320E 3.2GHz 8-Core Processor  ($115.99 @ Jet)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9a 57.5 CFM CPU Cooler  ($38.49 @ OutletPC)

    Wired Network Adapter: TP-Link TG-3468 PCI-Express x1 10/100/1000 Mbps Network Adapter  ($11.81 @ Newegg)

Other: Thermaltake Commander FX SATA Powered 10 Port Fan Hub AC-007-AN1NAN-A1  ($12.99 @ Newegg)
    Other: Rosewill RSV-Z2600, 2U Rackmount Server Case / Server Chassis, 4x 3.5"  ($69.98 @ Newegg)
    Total: $437.73

I had almost all the parts already on hand. The only parts I bought just for this build was the case, cpu cooler, fans, ssd, and nics.  I might upgrade to a proper intel nic setup in the future. For the rack i bought the Samson SRK21 22u rack, TP-Link 24 port switch (TL-SG1024), and a CyberPower Rackbar Surge Suppressor (RKBS15S2F12R). Still need to purchase the access point but haven't chosen one yet. Let me know if there's anything you'd add to the setup or do different. Thanks.

These numbers sound good.. except its double speak. All the cards went up a tier, especially in price. The 2080ti replaces the titan, the 2080 replaces the 1080ti.. etc etc. So if the 2080 is 40% better than the 1080, thats useless. Is 1080ti money. It needs to be 25% better than the 1080ti to be worth it. But its most likely a close tie to the 1080ti.

Linux doesnt install crapware randomly that i never asked for, doesnt serve me ads despite being paid software, and gives the user control over updates/privacy/and reboots. Windows 10 is a flaming turd that people only tolerate because the AAA games are still there (and it has adobe, which still has users despite being poorly optimized and un-innovative). It's days are numbered as long as this continues and they continue to piss off the enterprise by having buggy forced updates that break critical systems.

I guess i can just keep stating this over and over since you's STILL never refuted any of these claims.

I can't be persuaded with your argument since you failed to refute any of the claims I made. I don't live in a world where copying and pasting is hard (thats easier than finagling with registries, dll's, and .net framework), i can't compare anything to linux's main os website because i dont know what main linux is? compared to microsoft's legit (legit what?). I cant even read that sentence "compared to MS's legit happened with Mint". Linux drivers are actually pretty stable now, You don't even mention by name what you feel is the most common API so I cant be swayed but that.

No comments because Linux doesn't really need additional strengths over windows 10. That battle is won. Overkill routers aren't dumb. But i think i agree with your sentiment, overkill overpriced consumer routers promising wireless speeds not possible on planet earth, gaming performance enhancing lies (crappy QOS), and lots of other pointless over-hyped "features" are meant to rob money from dumb consumers. No router is overkill if it has wireless built in. Do you really want to replace your processor, memory and nics every time a new wireless technology comes out? A router isnt overkill unless its running pfsense, and no matter how overkill it is, its a computer, and can be repurposed in the future. I don't know what $400 routers are going to hype to gamers when everyone has gigabit in the future and no need for QOS. My router has trunked connections to my switch, thats overkill, and probably soon to be replaced with SFP+. A router with a cell phone processor with 512mb of memory and 12 antennas isn't overkill, its just poor use of money.

I was suprised that linus wasn't thrilled that the laptop was thicker. This unnecessary trend to make all devices slimmer and smaller has ruined the usefulness of so many devices. Praise it for being thicker! It will run cooler, have more ports, and be easier to work on.
