  1. Switching between branches in our semester project's Git repo (26550 objects at the moment) takes between 90 seconds and four minutes when it's based on an HDD.

On my laptop's SSD, the same thing happens in about 10 seconds.

Note to self: Get more SSDs.

Aye. Must upgrade entire server to SSDs.

On a completely unrelated note, does anyone know of any lightly-guarded banks?

SSHDs also do the job nicely. I don't see why people don't like them.

Thou SSDs are pretty affordable now.

Yup, there are few things which are as scarily adept at sucking your bank account dry as storage builds. :D

      Except ex-spouses, probably.

LOL I dont have to worry about a wife taking my money. I don't have one!

From what I can tell, wives aren't that dangerous, it's when you perform the upgrade from spouse to ex that things break. Seems to introduce some malware into your finances or something like that.

@Vitalius: Yeah, going through this stuff and cleaning it out takes ages, let alone actually sorting it.

@Rw: Honestly, I don't actually know, as I haven't sorted through most of it. :D

I have a bit of a weakness for space pics and beautiful scenery/places actually (I once wrote a pic crawler for a few space sites like Hubble, ESA and eso.org to grab all pictures in their highest-quality version). Not that those make up my entire collection, but they're the ones least li...

  8. Firefox, oh Firefox, why art thou a ball of cocks? Mightily browsing the web I was, opening tabs for any lost cause. Many a dickhead had bannage upon them, many a pornvid still had to be viewed, and even my youtube was not using flash, when alas you decided you'd rather just crash.

Hehe, sounds about right. Already done that though, it's not that. It feels like FF is caching certain stuff, and then needs to reload it and re-render it, which is completely retarded on a machine with 16GB of RAM, obviously. I've tried to tweak caching settings, but things got kinda wonky. :D

    3. prolemur

      prolemur

Ya that only lowered usage right after installing, but now its back to 15% usage and unbelievably slow. Takes 3 seconds to switch tabs, dafuq?!

I'll see if I can copy the images onto my server and reduce them to a comfortable size, but spoilers are just too ugly. And if you want to vote, you'll need to look at the images anyway...

Side note: Some people's formatting skills are rather bad, to be very generous. I cleaned up what I could, but might have overlooked some stuff. I'll have nightmares for days... :P

      alpenwasser

@Andy: Indeed, that is the sane course of action, but still, the mind wonders.

@Vitalius: HA, the word I actually used was "hash" (as in the data structure), but still, A+ for style. :D

@WD: Haha, fair enough. I'm rather interested in the subject of languages as well as math/science and stuff. I didn't take Latin because it's useful, after all. ;)

    3. MrSuperb

      MrSuperb

now I am interested ... what does a "hash" possess :D

    4. alpenwasser

      alpenwasser

Well, it possesses content, as in "a hash's contents". :D

Although it's probably more reasonable to just use "the hash data blablabla" or sth like that.

Do you have two Titans now then?!?!?

    4. alpenwasser

      alpenwasser

Nope, still just the one. But thinking of getting a regular 780 (don't need SLI for BOINC, so can use different GPUs), and even though the active backplate is useless for the regular 780 (no RAM chips on back side to cool), having an active and a passive one just wouldn't look right, so two it is. :D

Interestingly enough, the update on one of the other VMs did not break that one despite almost identical configuration (they're both based on the same VM file originally, not that many differences between the two).

      Very curious... and annoying. :(

    3. alpenwasser

      alpenwasser

Haha, you are fast man. :D

Anyway, I'll try to do some diagnosis tomorrow. Given enough time, I might be able to track down which packages are causing the issues from the upgrade (yay, 118 in total :D), then go from there.

Trouble is, I don't really have the bloody time for this atm. Might just not update and leave it as-is for now, come back later (I have a backup from before the update, luckily :)).

But not updating is a double-edged sword as the longer you wait, the...

But not updating is a double-edged sword as the longer you wait, the higher potential for issues IME.

Will need to see. Investing days into tracking this down is just not feasible atm.

      That's... not a lot. :D

I'm currently running a bit low on my server too, but I still have ~150 GB free atm. Don't have the money to upgrade though, so will probably need to start deleting stuff soon.

    4. terrytek

      terrytek

Well, 150GB is a lot in my terms, but I'm a flat broke teen, bro. I wish my dad would buy me an extra hard drive or two.
