Get RTX 2080 ti or wait for next gen?

I'm coming from 2 GTX 980s and have them in a custom hardline water cooling setup   I am able to push any current game at 1080p max, but I'm about to upgrade to a ultra wide 1440p or go back to 3 1080p in surround.  I am wanting more horse power to run games in VR as I am seeing some struggle in games already.  I only like upgrading every few generations r because of cost and time it takes to do the hardline (not much I know, but time is time).  I am liking what I see with RTX enabled.  I play mostly Metro, Project Cars 2 in VR, Battlefield, Tomb Raider and Crysis.  Should I go and drop 1600 on the top EVGA RTX 2080ti and call it for a few years or wait for the 3080ti whenever that is being spoken of or arrives in the next 1-3 years.  I know Ray Tracing is just eye candy, but in Metro Exodus, it looks to really enhance the spooky factor of the game.  Any thoughts?

i would try to sell them and i would buy the best 1080ti around me with the money and some christmas gifts

i use MSI 1080ti Gaming X Trio overclocked to 2ghz here and in vr as well as 1440p it murder games.

i use oculus with supersampling...i don't think VR even use your second card at all...

With 11GB the 1080ti can render super high resolutions without any drama.

Don't drop 1600 for it unless it comes with a waterblock.

EVGA makes a hydro copper ed waterblock. just buy the cheapest FE or similar and get a ekwb waterblock.

I'm not sure where you're getting $1600 from for the top EVGA 2080Ti, as the highest priced one on their website is $1350 (FTW3).

 

That said, if you're going to water cool it, I'd just get something like the Black Edition for a mere $1,000, slap a waterblock on it, and overclock it.

short answer, wait for next gen.

 

long answer, if you have a chance of doing 4k/120/144hz, wait for next gen.

 

Ray Tracing looks to be not worth it at all til...next gen (and it's not certain we'll get enough horsepower by then, just forget about RT)

 

The only situation where you must get the 2080 ti now is if u can't wait at all, or absolutely need the last +20% over the 2080 to drive whatever you are doing smoothly.

Battlefield 5 is breath taking on a 27'' 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS monitor, it's worth every penny i would go to any lenght to keep this level of gaming experience at this point...2080ti wouldn't be out of the question but an overclocked 1080ti bench better than RTX2080 and can cost much less if you're lucky

it's amazing, the more you play the more you notice all the effort they put on making those games look unbelieably detailed on ultra settings...its beautiful.

I come from 2 980tis to a 2080 and it was a big upgrade so I can only images from 980s ,30 percent slower than 980ti to a 2080ti 30 percentage faster than a 2080 will be huge

I've been very tempted to just go get a 1080ti. 1440p is where I'm looking for a monitor.  If they come out with a ultra wide 1440p 120/144Hz IPS G-SYNC monitor, I'll do what was necessary to push those frame rates and buy an appropriate card to go with it.

Those are very interesting.  Will have to see/read some reviews on those.  

 

Do these support Nvidia 3D Vision?  The Metro games look so good and are so much more atmospheric in 3D.  I know it'sa gimmick, but I love it.  I'm I debating going ultra wide or doing 3 monitors.  I do racing sims and they are great in surround.  Plus the extra real estate for productivity is great.  Another  reason I want the upgrade.  For the VRAM.
