Looks like a higher clocked 580 seeing around 8-12% improvement in FPS with clocks that are more stable. It is nice to see something close the gap from the 580 and vega 56.

yes, but it is also on 12nm vs 14nm and due to that clocks are more stable. uses slightly lower voltage for higher clocks.

It's solid as refresh v2 though. It's an very important tier for cards. But price seems bit high though.

The only thing that irks me is it has a higher power consumption, despite being on a smaller node. The power consumption would've made more sense if all they did was increase the clock speeds.

it increased a very small amount when you compare stock for stock, and considering the large increase in core clock, its not bad at all, and if you want you can always lower the voltage a bit and reduce it, you can even go further push the clocks to say 1470-1500 and increase the memory clock to get the same or better performance (that card should be severely memory bottlenecked)

From what I've looked at, the increase is as if all you did was bump up the clock speed. The official specs have it at 15% higher clock speeds, and I was seeing about 10%-15% higher power consumption.

 

EDIT: I'm not trying to nitpick and say this card sucks. I'm trying to understand why this is happening.

So it's better than a 980, but worse than a 1070.

 

I'm interested to see how it stacks up against a 980Ti, as a used 980Ti could potentially be better price/performance.

it seems it depends on which card yo compare against as some have lower or higher tdps, for example on hardware unboxed they had the card consume about the same amount of power

Considering the increasing cost of GDDR5 and also it's positioning as a RX _90 card, I'm not surprised.

The RX 580 8GB for $230 is not bad although I doubt anybody is selling them for less than $250 new due to memory shortages with GDDR5.

 

The RX 590 is only $279 (Providing about 80% of the performance of a 1070)  vs the GTX 1070 which was selling for $449/499 at one point.

 

Previous 90 class cards from AMD (such as the R9 290 and R9 390) had an MSRP of like $300-500.

AnandTech and Tom's Hardware showed the stock RX 590 consumes more power

I'm checking my retailers and prices for these cards are way higher than that though. I got R9 290 for like $300ish back then. Now RX570 is close to those prices where I am and RX580 is like almost twice the launch price. Specially looking at custom cards.
