A Japanese minister in charge of cyber security has provoked astonishment by admitting he has never used a computer in his professional life, and appearing confused by the concept of a USB drive.

Quote

Yoshitaka Sakurada, 68, is the deputy chief of the government’s cyber security strategy office and also the minister in charge of the Olympic and Paralympic Games that Tokyo will host in 2020.

My thought:

? I don't even know if this is a joke... I guess it's the best cyber security if you don't bloody go on the cyber world?

Jokes aside, maybe we should be more careful when using Japanese government's online services. God knows what "policies" he'd approved. And seriously, how would he know what to suggest and approve for "cyber security"?

I think in his life, he touched a computer but he didn't use it

Huh? I call bs! There is no computer in his office? How does he get work done, write it all down?

Probably have a ton of assistants he can delegate to and dictate everything to be written. Horribly bureaucratic but wouldn't be surprising.

I mean if you can run an entire country based on information given solely through TV and colored flashcards then anything's possible.

This rise a big question on the selection of ministry and on the selection system of Japan or maybe this can be rumor news.

Well, to his credit, he's extremely safe from hackers.

More seriously, high level management is just that. He's going to be at the top of a power structure and everything below him would be run by specialists and section chiefs that would have the technical skill sets. A quick look at his positions within the LDP, without even going to Japanese sources, means he's a big power player that's part of the oligarchy. Competence is still utterly expected of them, so he has staff that would actually be in charge of policy details.

Also, and this is kind of important, but the Japanese system works by committee. He's the power player figurehead in most of the stuff he'd be in charge of anyway, because he has the ability to marshal connections & resources to the tasks at hand.

So he leads by example. A true visionary.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

He also appeared confused by the question when asked about whether USB drives were in use at Japanese nuclear facilities

This shouldn't even be a question. No such facilities should ever use removable media, ideally logging and configuration changes should be the only state changes.

Sakurada has been in office just over a month, after being appointed in a cabinet reshuffle following Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s reelection as head of his political party.

His Luddite tendencies aside, Sakurada has also struggled to master his Olympic brief, less than two years before the Games open in Tokyo.

Earlier this month he claimed to know nothing about plans for North Korea’s sports minister to attend a meeting in Tokyo at the end of the month, in violation of a ban on the regime’s officials entering Japan.

Seems he put into that position only a month ago, and likely (obviously) not for his qualifications for such a position.

Also seems he is having a tough time being the charge of the Olympics.

Quote

When Renho asked him how much funding the central government would contribute to the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, he responded: “1,500 yen”, which works out at just over $13, some way below the actual sum of 150 billion yen.

The dude is right tho as cyber security officer. If you don't own or even use a computer, you can't be hacked or have your data stolen. Cyber security 101.

To be fair, he did say that he'd never used a computer in his PROFESSIONAL life, he may well have used one in his personal life. Still pretty damning.
