The other two are indirectly defined by the Kilogram, and the atomic mass unit (which is already fundamentally defined).

 

Thus setting the kilogram to only fundamental definitions causes a shift in the others on their own.

Also the only reason the rest of the world has products made and measured in imperial is because the US still insists on it.  No point in companies making two of everything.

The change proposed to the moles definition is to remove it from its tie to a real entity.

may become “as many entities as the Avogadro number constant”.

A) It would be 52,700cm, not 527,000cm.

B) Common sense means you wouldn't measure a skyscraper in centimetres, just like you wouldn't say "That skyscraper is 82992/4s of an inch".

Besides the kilogram prototype system we've used has a problem: it and the copies that were created have deviated in mass over time. It's not a good idea to have something that defines a unit of physics that changes over time.

I guess it's best to wait that event is starting today up until Friday. They'll probably be giving the details as they arise.

As someone pointed out, the kg was used to measure other units that'll be changed by the change of the kilogram definition as well indirectly. Issue so far if I remember correctly, is that you could define Ampere based on Kilogram and vice versa, so you needed to fix one of them in order to well define the other one.

All in all, seems like a good change. Practically it just don't change anything for most people, but it'll help solidify the system by ironing out the last weakpoint.

But then again, the US and UK will still use a poorly designed system for day to day use and use the metric system for science, so that won't change much on that either.

No benefit = The entire rest of the world needs to adapt to how I do things, speak my crappy and simplistic language, use my nonsensical and stupid measuring system, counting large numbers differently and also breaking the numbering structure, etc. And even if a couple of my own astronauts need to fucking die because all of us refusing to abandon imperial so be it.
