The other two are indirectly defined by the Kilogram, and the atomic mass unit (which is already fundamentally defined).

Thus setting the kilogram to only fundamental definitions causes a shift in the others on their own.

That skyscraper is either 1,729 feet, 576.3 yards, or 527.0 meters, or 527,000 centimeters.

I'll take the feet and yardage.

I normally go by floors with the assumption that a floor is between 12 and 14 feet tall.

It's a bit beyond this topic, but if you dig deep into the woods on the topic, SI isn't exactly neutral for the intentions of many of its pushers. But, the lack of a naturalistic heuristic within SI means it is always dis-associative within the mind of someone that only learned in base-10. It causes issues, much like anyone that's been taught a constructed language at an early age.

I'd also, again, like to point out that we switch between the two all the time, but we keep certain things in certain measures and just use whichever is most practical. Metric is a lot easier for scientific work, but you don't realize how much easier it is to communicate in a real-world project in Imperial.

I learned how to use fractions and decimals in school. Not that I've ever really needed to use either in day to day life. I've built things, never had any issues using SI.

Switching to metric would only cause me difficulty for zero actual benefit because I already know how to use SI. It's not "easier" if I have to re-learn what I already know how to do.

And if I need things super accurate, of course I'm going to be using metric, but I'm also going to be using a calculator if I need to.

Computer's don't make errors. What they do, they do on purpose. By now your name and particulars have been fed into every laptop, desktop, mainframe and supermarket scanner that collectively make up the global information conspiracy, otherwise known as The Beast.

You just be careful. Computers have already beaten the Communists at chess. Next thing you know, they'll be beating humans.

Some people would still be affected by the adjustments. Since metric is in use in all bar 4 countries:

Also the only reason the rest of the world has products made and measured in imperial is because the US still insists on it.  No point in companies making two of everything.

Okay, not like we common people will ever notice any difference.

This will mainly impact people like scientists or NASA engineers I guess?

Still, good that they decided to modernize the way they did things.

I doubt this will make chem classes more confusing since it will likely only apply to those already in the field where narrowed margins matter.

The change proposed to the moles definition is to remove it from its tie to a real entity.

“Amount of atoms contained in 12g of carbon”

may become “as many entities as the Avogadro number constant”.

nice article about this was writte in January. https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/textbooks-need-an-update-after-moles-definition-changed/3008537.article

A) It would be 52,700cm, not 527,000cm.

B) Common sense means you wouldn't measure a skyscraper in centimetres, just like you wouldn't say "That skyscraper is 82992/4s of an inch".

Could those people be any more pedantic 😑!?

You kind of have to be in this field.

Besides the kilogram prototype system we've used has a problem: it and the copies that were created have deviated in mass over time. It's not a good idea to have something that defines a unit of physics that changes over time.

Hai!

There's also another new law coming into effect at the same time: Any PC Hardware reviewer that continues to provide component temps in Celsius but room temps in Salt-water-nonsense-scale will be send to a Gulag effective immediately.

I guess it's best to wait that event is starting today up until Friday. They'll probably be giving the details as they arise.

As someone pointed out, the kg was used to measure other units that'll be changed by the change of the kilogram definition as well indirectly. Issue so far if I remember correctly, is that you could define Ampere based on Kilogram and vice versa, so you needed to fix one of them in order to well define the other one.

All in all, seems like a good change. Practically it just don't change anything for most people, but it'll help solidify the system by ironing out the last weakpoint.

But then again, the US and UK will still use a poorly designed system for day to day use and use the metric system for science, so that won't change much on that either.

No benefit = The entire rest of the world needs to adapt to how I do things, speak my crappy and simplistic language, use my nonsensical and stupid measuring system, counting large numbers differently and also breaking the numbering structure, etc. And even if a couple of my own astronauts need to fucking die because all of us refusing to abandon imperial so be it.

Speed limits are the only thing that I can't change to metric.

It's more fun when you're in Europe.  The signs usually only have numbers here and my speedometer has a MPH scale, so as long as I don't go more than 1.6 times the speed limit I always argue that I wasn't speeding.

The judge last time didn't think it was funny though.

Anyway ...
