AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Ryzen 7 1700/ 1700X

Hello guys,

A friend of mine has already most of his Hardware, remains to choose his CPU.

 

Intel is to expensive in our country at the moment. So remains other choises like AMD.

I saw alote reviews, some say the 1700X is a better choise, others give the victory to the 2600.

 

In this case, its for gaming at 1080p (maybe in the future at 2K).

What would u choose, given the max perfomance possible?

 

Other specs of the Hardware he already owns is a Motherboard MSI B450I Gaming Plus with 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL15. Powersupply is a Corsair SF600 with a MSI GTX 1070Ti Armor.

 

CPU prices are:

- Ryzen 5 2600 = 170€

- Ryzen 5 2600X = 225€

- Ryzen 7 1700 = 199€

- Ryzen 7 1700X = 225€

- Ryzen 7 1800X = 239€

 

BTW he owns a cooler Noctua L9i with AM4 kit and a Artic Silver 5 as thermal solution.

 

What would u choose for gaming at 1080p (and future 2K)?

2600 for the better per core performence. Just overclock it as the x series only have a higher turbo

CPU: horrible Atom   GPU: VGA onboard   RAM: 4 gb ddr3 1333 mhz   HDD: 4x5400 RPM Samsung ECOGREEN (one slot is dead)   PSU: the adapter that came with it   Soundcard: nope   Case: didn't change that

 

Other PC's:

some core 2 duo HP Compaq's, 1 custom built pentium 4 3ghz, 1 Celeron HP Compaq, Kangroo Portable PC, Olivetti Portable PC, toshiba with ati rage series (disassembled rn), Fujitsu Siemens lifebook with not even a 3 gb hdd some other laptops I'm not going to list. just ask if you want to

 

Game consoles:

PS4 slim glacier white 500 gb, PS4 FTP Special Edition 500 gb, Xbox, 3 DS lites, DSI XL, Gameboy Advanced Color, PS Vita v2, Wii, PS3 500 gb

How much can he overclock?

 

I have the same CPU but I only manage to get 3.9GHz at all cores with no increase of voltage. If I do increase voltage it just crashes.

Still what I saw of the reviews, my board (and his) can handle the OC. Well anyways im happy with 3.9Ghz or at auto its goes to 3.925GHz.

I had the same debate 2 weeks ago, 2600 or 1700x. For only $10 more, I chose the 1700x. I'm running OC 3.9G @ 1.2375Vcore. But my max temp is kind of high due to bad cooling. Once new fans arrive, I expect to go to 4, maybe 4.1ghz if I'm lucky.

Still not disappointed...1725 in cinebench, 8hrs Prime95 small fft testing, no crashing.

 

MSI Tomahawk B450, TridentZ 3200 16-18-18-36 2x8gb.

 

I chose the 1700x due to video and photo editing. If you'll only be gaming and web surfing, the 2600 should suffice quite nicely.

 

As a side note, I briefly ran 4ghz @ 1.35Vcore and ran Cinebench quickly before temps had a chance to get too high. 3.9ghz vs 4ghz was only a 45-50 point difference. But I didn't do much to adjust settings other than voltage. I suspect I might be able to hit 1800 with good settings and a lot of luck. So I don't think 4ghz would be very beneficial, or even noticeable, over 3.9ghz on a 1700x.

Well the videos on youtube are pretty confusing and doesn´t help, some are fake even...

 

In gaming, Im using the 2600 with open case and I get max 69ºC ofc with stock cooler BUT its running at 3,9GHz all the time, no OC, justo a turbo of MSI.

 

I get 1280 on Cinebench ofc its not the best score but still...

He will only gaming so... I don´t think that the old gen will benifit in games. But thats why I asked u guys because there is more chance someone that knows here then on youtube!

Not a lot on a NH-L9i lol. I would say it's about comparable to a stock AMD cooler. Every chip overclocks differently, so your results will vary.

True. Some can achive more then others... sadly!

 

I choose to change case to a Mini-ITX Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV and buying a coolermaster 120 Lite (water cooler) atleast its better then the air cooler

That 3.9g during turbo isn't on all cores though. If you lowered Vcore and raised multi, you'd probably be able to run 3.9g on all cores around 75c if I had to guess. Which is what I'd expect from stock cooler and open case.

 

At 3.9g OC, I'm running about 34c idle and with all cores @ 100%, never go over 75c. This is with a Hyper 212 LED, inside an old, cramped, Smilodon case with 2x120m and 2x80mm fans. New fans have been shipped, at which point I'll know if I stand a chance to get to 4.1 with something like a Mugen 5 / Scythe Ninja 5. 4.1 on only 2x120s and air cooled would be sweet.

i would go for the 2600. best value CPU on the market right now imo and it works better with higher RAM speeds than the first gen ryzen that you also listed.

Well between 2600x and 1700x i d choose 2600x for the reasons people above mentioned but for 14$ more i d choose the 1800x which is a great 8 core chip, and probably advance to a better noctua cooler.

And to explain my 1800x choice i will say that: 2600x is maybe a better choice now but after a couple of years 1800x will hold its ground better (just think of an i7 2700k vs i5 4570).

I vote for the Ryzen 5 2600. I actually upgraded from the Ryzen 7 1700 and I have seen a good performance boost when I switched to the Ryzen 5 2600. Additionally, I could not get a stable overclock over 3.9 GHz with the R7 1700 but my R5 2600 can maintain a stable 4.2 GHz. To keep temps low I usually run the 2600 at 4.0 GHz.
