how old is your pc and are you looking to upgrade soon?

Ashley MLP Fangirl

Well I'd say my PC is about 6.5 years old. The only upgrade I might need is 16GB RAM. Everything else is more than enough for my needs.

My PC has undergone some changes as follows:

I just bought a RX 470 to replace my R9 380. I plan on keeping the 4670k for another few years. Hopefully by then something worthwhile will be out to upgrade to.

I have a lot of computers (I have a problem.)

Out of the 6ish of them, 3 are likely able to reach 60 FPS at 1080p in modern titles on high. 1 is likely to reach 60 fps on medium at 1080p, and the other 2 probably wouldn't do great in modern gaming, but are great for old games.

I don't understand why people feel the need to upgrade all the time. Even 10+ year old computers can play modern games at 1080p 60 fps (with an upgraded GPU of course.)

Want a cheap gaming rig? Go buy an old LGA 775 board and a used 960 and have yourself a gaming rig for $300. Want better frame rates? Buy a 970... or a 980 for $200.

I think it has been a good three years now since I built mine and I did so on a budget. It's held up okay but playing the recent Black Ops 4 beta made me realize it is really time to upgrade. I'm at the point now where a lot needs to be replaced.

I just upgraded my GPU last month from a 960 to an EVGA 1070 SC2 so I'm set there for now. Obviously my HDD can stay as a supplement to the SSD I still need to upgrade to, my PSU probably can stay, and my optical drives can stay, although I will probably only keep the BD drive as a second drive and buy a 4k BD drive for my ripping needs. Yes, I still use optical drives because I like to buy music and visual media on disc for the best quality and then rip them.

My CPU is in desperate need of upgrading but to do that I will have to buy a new mobo regardless if I go Intel or stay AMD and go with Ryzen. Plus I'll need RAM. My fugly case will also be replaced because I really have grown tired of it and it is a cheap piece of crap lol.

So I'll basically be building a new PC and salvaging some components from my current build. I have an extra PSU and tons of hard drives sitting around so I might just repurpose this old machine for something else. Maybe I'll turn it into a dedicated HTPC instead of having mine do double duty or maybe a dedicated capture box. Idk.

Anyway, I'll probably do this next year. I'm hoping it will be by Spring.

Just upgraded from a 970 to a 2080 two weeks ago. I have it combined with a 7700k which I might upgrade for Zen2 depending on Intel and performance.

Storage-wise I'm still good, I am thinking about getting another M.2.

I'll probably buy an ultrawide this December, looking at the ASUS ProArt PA34V, LG 34GK950G-B or Dell AW3418DW.

I have pondered this question myself the past few years. My current system specs, apart from the GPU and HDD's/SSD's, date back to 2012. This year I decided to upgrade to the GTX 1080 Ti. I haven't upgraded the other parts of my system because I just don't game anymore and when I do my system is able to handle the games so I see no need. However my case, lighting and water-cooling parts have constantly been upgrading and modded.

I kind of got tired of the chase, always trying to have the latest hardware is the most pointless endeavour in the technology world.

Ayyyyy another X58 user! Welcome to the club :) I use an X5675 at 4GHz (most of the time) as well as 8GB RAM and an HD 7970 3GB. This personally runs all the games I want at anywhere between Ultra and medium settings as I use a triple monitor set up. I cannot complain about my build, the only thing I regret is the fact that I didn't get any higher VRAM and I want to fill up all my 6 Dimm slots.

I won't upgrade until it either fails or I am interested in any newer/more powerful hardware at a really damn cheap price.

My Rig:

Xeon E5 1680 V2 @ 4.5GHz - Asus Rampage IV Extreme X79 Mobo - 64GB DDR3 1600MHz - 8 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance Low Profile - CAS 10-10-10-27 - AMD Radeon RX 6700XT Sapphire Pulse 12GB - DeepCool E-Shield E-ATX Tempered Glass Case - 1 x 1TB Crucial P1 NVMe SSD - BeQuiet Straight Power 11 850W Gold+ Quad rail - Fractal Design Celsius S36 & 6 x 120mm silent fans - Lenovo KBBH21 - Corsair Glaive RGB Pro - Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit

Well, just look at my signature, it's from 2010 and was upgraded along the way with a slightly "newer" GPU (had a 5870 before), 16GB of RAM (from 8GB initially) and a 120GB Intel SSDs. (SSDs in 2010 were garbage and expensive... I bought two, lol... $299.94 for two 64GB SSD that were barely as fast as a HDD, but the random reads/writes were better at least... what a terrible purchase that was)

Right now, I'm looking to upgrade when the next gen of CPU and GPU from AMD are out, so next year.

Probably won't go top of the line though, I hardly play games these days honestly... Even bought FF15 on the first of September(still quite playable on my machine), played it a bit, haven't touched it in over a month(30 of september according to Steam), I think I got to chapter 5 or 6?

I just don't feel the drive to play games anymore...

As such my next PC will probably cost me around $1000, for mid range.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

Only OG parts are the two HDDs which are from around 2013. Everything else has been upgraded though.

Tempted by the 2080 Ti but better things are coming. Maybe Turing refresh or whatever comes next. Plenty of time tho.

Only around 9-10 months old. Completely re-did everything when I switched from Intel to AMD.

Don't plan on upgrading anything except maybe some more RAM.

EDIT: Maybe a new case too...and maybe a new PSU...and some better lighting. But that's it.

Current rig is just a year old, I shall upgrade the whole thing in another year.

I buy custom built systems now and can benefit from no interest payments made by my company, sell the old rig and pay it all off in a couple of months.

I like to let new major tech bed in, let the glitches get sorted and the price drops and then buy the best I can for gaming, which is all I do on PC.

But I am always buying different used stuff for the PC (monitors, headsets, mice, keyboards etc), I like to test stuff and see if it improves my FPS gaming - the tech and testing is as much fun for me as playing.

Soon I need sort out selling a bunch of stuff I have acquired, I am an eBay junky....................LOL.

I try to run on a 2 year cycle, alternating between video card and motherboard\cpu

Upgrade video card, 2 years later, upgrade the motherboard\CPU, another 2 years later, video card time.

Other things like storage, case, power supply, etc, get replaced as needed.  I just did my MB/CPU, so my gtx1070 will have to do for another 2 years.  By that time, RTX may be a viable option with my budget.

2012 build:

FX 8350 in sig

Still smashes triple A titles in 1600x900 (my preferred resolution for gaming, I have a 2k Acer Pred - gave that to my wife) while everyone and their mother complains (but 99% of them have never used/owned one and are just regurging what they have read or were told) about this CPU.

I want to upgrade solely because I find the entire experience enjoyable.  I wont be upgrading because its still smashing titles today.  Until I cant run stuff on settings I care about, I wont be replacing.

A year and the only upgrade I'd do is add an m.2 SSD to the mix and maybe swap my cpu cooler's fan to the latest from Noctua.

It's kind of a mixed setup. The SSD and the HDD are from my original HP pre-built from 2014, which I then upgraded with a GTX 970 in 2015. Then I played with that until 2018 spring and changed everything except the mass memory and the GPU. Looking at downgrading rather than upgrading atm. Might sell it away and buy a new phone and some used PC for ~400€.

My stuff:

#1. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

#2. It's best to keep your mouth shut; and appear to be stupid, rather than open it and remove all doubt.

#3. There is nothing "wrong" with being wrong. Learning from a mistake can be more valuable than not making one in the first place.

Follow these simple rules in life, and I promise you, things magically get easier. " - MageTank 31-10-2016

My main rig (specs in profile) was built in February 2016, so it's little over 2.5 years old.  I upgraded the GPU and main SSD last year around Christmas and replaced a faulty PSU this spring.

I hope to get about 4-5 more years out of it before having to do a major upgrade.

My secondary rig is a Sandy Bridge machine from 2011.  i5-2500 on Z77.  The last GPU upgrade was the summer of 2017, when I replaced the dying SLI 770s with a 1060 (3GB).

Still perfectly usable for everything except hardcore gaming, I don't see me upgrading/replacing this one in the next couple of years either.

you are lucky to have DDR3 ram. that's really cheap used.

Sadly, my motherboard only has 2 RAM slots, which currently have 4GB each. So I'd have to buy 2x8GB, which is kinda expensive for me, since I am in the process of restoring an old car and the money I have is mainly for that, but looking at how it's going I'll probably have enough money for RAM. 8GB is fine for now, though so I'm not in a hurry to upgrade.
