Apple launches "vintage" repair program for Mac and iPhone

Today it would appear that Apple has added a new repair program for those of use with older Apple devices.

Quote

The new program at first will include the iPhone 5 and other Apple products that are about to become obsolete, and in the coming weeks will add more products to the list for devices that previously lost repair support.

Quote

The full list of devices that currently fall under Apple’s new program include:

  • iPhone 5 (GSM/CDMA)
  • MacBook Air (11 inch, Mid 2012)
  • MacBook Air (13 inch, Mid 2012)
  • iMac (21.5 inch, Mid 2011) – US and Turkey only
  • iMac (27 inch, Mid 2011) – US and Turkey only

So it seems like Apple is, imo, more than likely trying to keep people from seeking out independent repair shops that are run by people like Louis Rossmann.

Quote

Apple will also soon add more devices including the iPhone 4s and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012) on Nov, 30, 2018. That will be followed by the MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013), MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac Pro (Mid 2012), and iPhone 5 (GSM) on December, 30, 2018. The program covers the devices above at Apple stores and authorized service providers worldwide unless otherwise noted.

Yeah, considering how far back these programs go, I can't help but feel that they are trying to hush the calls for Right to Repair by opening up this program to devices that are almost completely unusable in todays world. Apple typically will classify a product as vintage/obsolete after 7 years, after then you are SoL for 1st party repairs.

Quote

For the new Pilot program, Apple will only be offering repairs for vintage devices based on part availability. Otherwise customers will be told that inventory isn’t available because the product is considered vintage. So the new program doesn’t guarantee you a repair, but it’s a nice change from Apple’s previous policy where it stopped offering repairs entirely after classifying devices as vintage.

So it looks like they will only be servicing these machines if they have the parts just lying around or they come across them from trade ins or their recycle program.

That could also be another source of this program coming into existence. Apple has made it very clear that they would like tor recycle everything that they can and make their manufacturing process and how they operate as a company as green as possible. Getting people to bring in their old dying Macs for repairs or recycling if the repair is not viable is a great way to keep Apple devices out of landfills.

PR move after this whole "seize parts from people repairing devices Apple refused to repair" thing.

At least there's an option provided I guess.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

TBH I'm more concerned that it seems like it's only gonna cover a few devices and they're probably still gonna go after people importing parts to fix even older ones or ones not covered.

2012 isn't vintage. That means a ps4 is one year from "vintage". I have stuff that's 3x older I don't consider vintage. Not supporting it is one thing, but "vintage" is almost insulting.

Devices will be added over time, and repair options are based on if they have parts or not.

Apple is creating the need/demand for independent repair shops

The more they fight it , the more people will seek out , create , and devise ways to circumvent apple.

Much like pirating anything ever.... The entire world has more money , more energy , more time , and is 10 steps ahead of apple. Apple cannot stay on top of it , they cannot stop or block everyone , and if they do..... it will be their own downfall to make unrepairable products that do not last long anymore.

You joke about it but my dad still uses his 3,1 Mac Pro every day for final cut and Lightroom and it’s completely fine. A bit slow but totally usable. Hopefully the new Mac pros bring back the modularity they promised

Whether or not they bring back modularity, I doubt anything will look at good as the mac pro aluminum cases. There's a place that sells custom cut kits to convert these to ATX, and I'm seriously considering moving one o f my PCs to it.

Y'know, I hear "vintage" and think... I dunno... Like a Apple II or macintosh. Hell, even a power mac g something. But 2011? Ugh. Perpetuating this notion that tech becomes useless and needs to be replaced every other year.

Meanwhile in reality, core 2 duos and Athlon 64 x2s are still perfectly usable for basic use and a core 2 quad can get you by, even with modern gaming and even basic HD video editing. Hell, I've streamed via OBS on a OC'd q6600 with decent results.

Calling 2011 "vintage" sickens me. Hearing "obsolete" makes me even madder. Not just a jab at Apple either, because it's not just them. Of course conpanies selling computers want you to believe that, yknow, to sell more computers.

In the case of macOS, the new graphics API they are using means that the GPUs in machines 2011 and older are incapable of running them. The result is unsupported Macs except where you can upgrade the GPUs as is the case with some of the old Mac Pros.

PR move after this whole "seize parts from people repairing devices Apple refused to repair" thing.

At least there's an option provided I guess.

Apple didn’t seize any parts but yeah it’s very much a PR move.

How is any of this bad news, Apple is literally extending first party support for products 7 years and older. Not too many other manufacturers of PCs or phones would have anything similar on offer?

Sure there might be another agenda, but it's still good for the consumer. We should be celebrating and supporting Apple to extend the coverage of this program!

Agreed with @DrMacintosh. This move seems to quite clearly indicate attempts to cutoff both the ability and justification for third party repair centers. See this way they can claim they offer the repair when they work for the unjust confiscation of alternative parts. And people who think these companies aren't twisting the arms and machinations of institutions like customs are more than a little naive.

Which isnt just Apple. John Deere is arguably the single biggest violator and fighter of the right to repair movement.

Funnily enough, because automakers already had such regulation forced upon them ages ago, they've found quite a profitable niche in directly supplying both the second hand parts and repair training.

Probably. Still good no matter what the motivation was.

Is it good if they manage to screw up legislation that would actually be good for consumers? No obviously not and Apple isnt doing this altruistically. Theyre doing it out of corporate greed.

Kinda like what Bezos did with his BS minimum wage stunt.
