I7 9700k or some of the older cpu's

Hey all

I'm wondering about what to get, should i get the i7 9700k or the i7 8700k, or perhaps one of them on the x99 platform with plus 6 cores.

I mostly do gaming at high refresh rate at 1440p

what games do you play? That kind of matters. Also what graphics card are you thinking about to pair with the i7?

You should probably go with the 8700k, its been out for a year and its been reviewed. Same with the z370 motherboards, theyve been out for a while and the best ones are known. Plus the 8700k is $370 usd and the 9700k is $420.

evga 3070 ultra

if you want to stick with intel, the 8700k will be the best price/performence.

but amd is with the intel shortage really good price/performencewise and more and more games are optimised with 8/16 in mind. look into the 2700(x)

the i7 8700K and i7 9700K are 'identical' being practical.

The lack of Hyper-Threading on the i7 9700K evens out the fact it has 2 extra cores, single core wise they are the same.

So it doesn't matter which one you get, I'd favour the i7 8700K for it's cheaper price tag.

If you want to shave off some more money without losing too much performance, I'm throwing my lot in for the i7-8700 (the non-K version).

Yeah like has been for a good while specially now with the inflated prices due to shortages the only Intel build I say that makes sense price wise against Ryzen+ ones is the b360+i7 8700 combo with the maximum 2666mhz memory.

It'll outperform the Ryzen 5 2600X single core still while giving you Ryzen 7 1700 multi-treading, it's a good in between for roughly the same cost the Ryzen builds.

Now go on overclocking master race, we're really looking at absurd prices for diminishing results if not at 1080p with a 1080 Ti / 2080 / 2080 Ti.

A ~$300 range CPU will do just fine here.

Not to mention how much money you'd likely have to spend to get to a stable max turbo of say 5.4GHz, a measly 15% increase in performance. (EDIT: Oh wait, I'm just echoing what you're saying)
