Hi all,

 

i need to build a new PC, my 2010 macbook is getting a old and dont want another mac;
I plan on running VM's from time to time; RTS games & auto CAD for 3d printing and possibly some CNC (at some point);

budget is around 2k CAD ( i am in Montreal)

i have a 27" 1440p dell monitor; i would like to upgrade to a 34" at some point

 

i am not a heavy gamer but i do like RTS games and want them to run smoothly; i also plan on keeping it for a decade or so...
this is what i picked on amazon.ca

total 1361$ + taxes

 

i do have a few old sata HDD with little use on them that should good enough for now

not sure what graphic card to get...thinking of getting a 1080 during black Friday or the holidays if i can get a good deal on one.

 

what do think ?

  • Wait for Black Friday, don't focus on Amazon. You'll save a ton of cash, or get significantly better parts.
  • Don't buy a used PSU; you lose out on the very long warranty. It's not worth it.
  • Check to make sure that the case isn't one of their shitty models; IIRC there's only one good one in the "500" line up.

Not sure if you have Memory Express or Canada computers in your area, if you do take a look at their website and inventory. I got a great deal on my GPU from Mem Ex.  Also, Newegg sometimes has better pricing than Amazon. If you can wait for parts, please do! Black Friday will be worth waiting for.

no memory express but a canada computer just opened downtown

intel is better singlecore-wise. but more and more games are utilizing 16 treads (so 8 cores with ht). the ryzen is budgetwise a better bet right now

You want something long-lasting and good for productivity - that's got Ryzen written all over it. Ryzen 2700(X) will do you perfectly and AMD has committed to the same socket (AM4) until 2020 so that opens up avenues for upgradability down the line if they've made some really good advancements (apparently they're bringing out 7nm chips in early next year which are apparently suppose to be somewhat of a game changer). Intel is generally better for gaming and AMD better for productivity (again, speaking in "general" terms) so for your use and application AMD is the way to go and as a bonus all their Ryzen 7 chips can be overclocked whilst your suggested i7-8700 can't. But that depends if you want to OC.

Let me re-iterate this hard. When a PSU goes it can easily cause a good sized piece of the rest of your hardware to emit the magic blue smoke. When your memory, or motherboard, or CPU, or GPU or pretty much anything else goes, you lose the part and if it's a drive some data potentially. When a PSU goes you could lose everything in the system and your data to boot. It's virtually allways going to be the most expensive thing to replace if it dies because of it;s love of frying other components along with it. In a worst case scenario you might have to bin your entire old system when it goes.

Build looks good! Only thing I would change is the motherboard from a X470 Gaming Pro to a X470 Gaming Plus - will save you some money and it's basically the same board except the Gaming Plus has better temps on the VRMs for overclocking.

 

With respects to the GPU just search the market during Black Friday and get the best GPU you can for the amount of money you've allocated to it. Zotac cards I've heard get a bit warm but they're still decent. Asus and EVGA generally make some really good cards.
