Apple does it and didn't get smacked with a huge fine. Windows still comes with edge so i am unsure how it makes sense presently. Also it makes 0 sense to not allow a company that creates an operating system to not include software as part of the os. It's not like Google even prevents you from going and installing a diffrent web browser. Honestly if anything not having a browser preinstalled would be worse for common users. The EU is just dumb about anything tech related and thinks they are helping when they have more harm than good so far. Video freebooting is not a big problem tbh. It's about the same a people pirating games.

I'm not in the EU so I'm not familiar with these new laws and what they will mean... But basically it will be up to google to pre-scan everything that is uploaded to the platform for any possible copyright infringement, and if they host anything that may infringe on someones copyright, Youtube/Google/Alphabet can be punished for hosting it? One of the issues Youtube is facing is that it receives far too much data to scan in real time...?

 

Youtube should just make it so that videos are uploaded as normal, and then once the Youtube algorithms/AI checks the video for copyright content it assigns a flag to the video to either pass or fail it.

People outside of the EU can still watch them as normal once they're uploaded since these laws won't apply to them, but people in the EU will get a warning message on videos that haven't been scanned yet saying "This video is not yet available in your region. Please check back once it has been approved". If the video gets approved, people in the EU can view the content as they normally would. If the video doesn't get approved, then they receive a warning message instead of the video stating that it is unavailable in their region with a link to info on the new laws.

 

Youtube could prioritise the partnered content creators (or whatever they're called now) in a fast lane to get almost instantaneous scanning to ensure their videos go up 'live' in the EU. The average joe uploader posting a video of their fishing trip or Fortnite gameplay footage may have to wait a few hours for their content to be approved and go live.

I think that youtube & others will be slightly appeased but this will still pass in the EU and eventually really put a dent on youtube.

 

The thing is that having a centralized service and company in charge of user content its just not a feasible idea. It becomes an easy target. A target of extremely large media companies that still have the money and the pull to kill their efforts instead of dying out to make sure user content is minimal and all the content still comes from them.

 

Or need I remind you just how many of youtube top channels and overall views go directly to record companies via VEVO already?

 

Youtube needs a bit more than angry posturing and seeking user sympathy. If they need to survive, they need to start fighting media companies on their terms: Bribe a few fucking politicians and stop getting beaten by others to the punch.

You don't understand how the  laws work and what the  problem was.

What apple does doesn't affect other companies because they are the only one that can use IOS. If Google was the only one that could use Android and customize it, EU wouldn't have done anything. But what's Google did affects companies like Samsung without being fair.

And most people seem to just trust how s company reacts to a law is the only way they could have reacted or the right way to react to it.

 

Like most people here doesn't seem to put any blame at Google at all, not even a tiny bit.

 

Google react the way it does not because it's that they must do, far from it, they do it because they try to use it to change the law in this case. And in the case of the fine they got they want EU to retract it/not do something similar again.

It does make sense to prohibit software bundling, as that's a way to abuse a monopoly. It's not fair competition between browsers if one is installed by default on most PCs.

 

Video freebooting is a big problem.

There's no requirement to scan in real time in the proposal.

I could say Google is a bit bloating the problem because EU is actually killing off one of the Googles milking cows: Google News. So far Google has had totally free advertising platform including news (Google steals the news stories from other sites, posts them as their own and include their own ads and rarely even include link to the source because that would create traffic to the original site which may use other than Googles ad platform). And that's actually the meat of the whole directive. Article 13 and 15 are still in there and they are fearful, but the main meal is to stop news stealing.

 

Also Google should be very well informed that the whole directive still waits for dissection and article by article voting. Google is just trying to get people completely against the EU so that they can save the Google News which quite clearly (even by the standards of the US) is stealing and apparently very profitable for Google.
