TL;DR:
Due to the mass amount of media uploaded every second, YouTube states that it'll no longer be able to accept per user uploads if EU copyright rules pass. Any new content would have to go through a company (e.g. TimeWarner, etc)

EU lawmakers have voted through the new rules and their wording could be finalised by the end of the year. The directive is expected to go into force soon after that.

 

My Thoughts:

It seems without potential safe haven options like DMCA provides, YouTube seems very hesitant to allow user content until it has been fully scanned by bots. Currently the automated process for identifying copyrighted content can take a couple hours to a week or two depending on the content. Surely, YouTube would not cripple itself, however.

On the bright side, it'd definitely help subscription services like Floatplane for people who'd rather watch the video's early.

 

On the other hand though, I bet all the youtube premium, or whatever they call them, content creators videos wouldn't have to wait so long to be uploaded, and they'd try to push people to "support" their favourite channels by becoming a paid sub to them.

Yeah that's the only way I can see this going. Paid entry into YouTube uploading for public videos. Even then, there'd be HUGE backlash.

ContentID is slow, hours or days. The new EU regulations would fine YouTube for even displaying them in the first place compared to DMCA.

No, it requires "reasonable efforts" and demanding immediate scanning is probably not reasonable.

Or Youtube could just ban anyone from the EU from uploading while the rest of the world still goes on. This is only make things sketchier and a new wave of torrenting. Hey that's actually a good idea. Make a new protocol or use advanced security measures to bring back limewire

First lawmakers have to implement this in national legislation, and then it has to be interpreted. There's definitely a lot of room for error, and I think article 13 is a really bad idea. I just don't think it's actually going to be that bad for Youtube specifically.

Google probably thought having Google chrome come with android was a reasonable thing to do but they got a huge fine for it. I would think they don't trust the EU to not fine them for something silly. I mean is this entire thing that big of a problem to begin with? I feel like they think the issue is much larger than it is and are creating a law to combat an issue that isn't nearly as big as they are making it out to be.

I just hate that their regulations affect my stuff when i am not part of the EU. They should make a system that makes the regulations zone specific that way they can deal with their own shitty regulations by themselves.
