CPU OC leading to GPU Issues

Hey LTT,

So I recently purchased a 1080 Ti (like 2-3 weeks ago), and installed it immediately (naturally).

Some background first: About 4 days ago, I pasted my CPU, as temps had slowly risen to much higher than they were when I built the computer about 2.5 years ago, and figured this was normal. Upon inspection, I think most of it was from the cooler not being tighten enough. So after doing that, I thought I would mess with my OC a little. It was at 4.2GHz @ 1.286v. I decided to switch to adaptive voltage, which will throttle down the voltage when the CPU is not being used 100% (obviously), to help bring idle temps down a bit.

Problem: After changing this, the GPU would only reach about 58% power at most. Clock speeds would reach 1900 something like normal, and it would use 100%, but the limiting power usage would lead to major frame loss (~50% lower than normal). I couldn't figure out what it was until I finally realized it started around the time I changed from manual voltage to adaptive. I switched it back to manual, and it fixed the problem.

So my question is: can a bad CPU OC really cause issues like that? What would have actually been the reason why that happened? I know this might be a bit technical but hoping to get some good responses:)

I didn't really know what thread to put this in, but I figured this would be best since the main issue was the overclock.
